The O'Jays: Survival CD Track Listing
The O'Jays
Survival (1975)
2000 Epic Associated/Legacy\nOriginally Released 1975\nRemastered CD Released May 30, 2000\n \nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: The O'Jays followed the spectacular Backstabbers and Ship Ahoy with the good, but not on the same level, Survival. It was unrealistic to expect ma sterpieces every time out, and the LP included many strong ballads an d good message tracks. But while it may not have been as epic in its performances and compositions, it was certainly the other albums' equ al in sales strength. The group had two number one R&B hits in 1975, "Give The People What They Want" and "I Love Music (Part 1)." In addi tion, the title track made the charts as the B-side to "Let Me Make Love To You," another rousing ballad. -- Ron Wynn \n\nAmazon.com Album Description\nFinally available at a lower price. Previously an exclusive to the Japanese market. This is their 1975 album featuring, 'Give The People What They Want' which was a number 1 R & B hit at the time.\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nPhilly soul at it's peak....., May 10, 2002 \nReviewer: ikaris from Bluffton, SC United States \nWhat took this classic soul album so long to be released is beyond me, but now that it's out there you need to pick it up if you're a true lover of r&b/soul music like I am. This is the O'Jays at the peak of their powers.\n\nThe obvious hits are there, like the title track, "Let Me Make Love To You" and "Give The People What They Want." But it only gets better from there. "Where Did We Go Wrong" and "How Time Flies" are top-of-the-line ballads, while "Never Break Us Up" closes out the album in fine style. This is one of the best Philadelphia International albums in history and is a perfect example of the PI sound. Gamble and Huff were on a major roll......\n\nGreat sound and nice reproduction of the original album art round out this re-release very nicely.\n\nNow, if only someone will get ahold of the O'Jays Imperial recordings and release their debut album "Comin' Through"........ \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nNot Just Surviving But Thriving!, August 13, 2001 \nReviewer: funkingroovin from Albuquerque, N.M. \nThe re-release of this remastered CD came as a surprise to me, following as it did the remastering of the commonly-acknowledged O'Jays' classics "Backstabbers" and "Live In London". "Survival"? Remastered and re-released before "Family Reunion" and "Ship Ahoy"? What's going on here?\n\nBut as even the most-casual listen will tell you, "Survival" is a fine example of the O'Jays' art.\n\nTrack-to-track, I'm even tempted to say it's the most even O'Jays album ever. Maybe it doesn't have the hits and the highs of "Family Reunion" or "Backstabbers", but it doesn't have their lows, either.\n\nRolling, rumbling funk, steaming Love Man pleas, social commentary and tender, lilting (but not diabetes-inducing) ballads--it's all here. And all graced with Gamble & Huff's formidable skills as arrangers and producers and Eddie LeVert's soaring, supple, monster of a voice.\n\nFor those of you who need a reminder, or an introduction, check "How Time Flies". It is The Great Unknown O'Jays' Classic, and completely typical of the fine music contained within.\n\nMaybe I shouldn't have been so surprised after all... \n\nHalf.com Album Credits\nJoe Tarisa, Engineer\n\nAlbum Notes\nProducers: Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff.\nReissue producer: Leo Sacks.\n\nRecorded at Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Includes liner notes by Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor.\n\nDigitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).\n\nOut of the many R&B vocal groups on the scene throughout the '60s and '70s, few were as committed to social comment as The O' Jays. Serving as mouthpieces for the production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, this vocal trio's string of hits, including "Love Train" and "Back Stabbers," set a style of thinking man's soul that continued on 1975's SURVIVAL. \n\nGilded by Gamble and Huff's lush arrangements and backed by the crack playing of Philly Soul house band MFSB, SURVIVAL includes populist anthems such as "Give The People What They Want," addresses the travails of everyday life in the funky title track, and class inequities on a soaring "Rich Get Richer." Led by master troubadour Eddie Levert, the O' Jays also keep one foot firmly in the land of romance, whether singing and swinging on "Never Break Us Up," pleading throughout "Let Me Make Love To You," or gently expressing their remorse on the string-laden "Where Did We Go Wrong."
