Proof: The Very Best of the Knack\n\nOriginally Released May 19, 1998 \n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Released to coincide with the group's 1998 reunion, Rhino's The Very Best of the Knack is designed to replace the 1992 compilation Retrospective: The Best of the Knack, and in many ways it does. Twelve of the 16 tracks are greatest hits, all but two of which were featured on Retrospective. Granted, "Rocket O' Love" appeared as a demo on the earlier compilation, and "Can't Put a Price on Love" is included here as a single edit, but it still contains all of the essentials -- "My Sharona," "Baby Talks Dirty," "Good Girls Don't" -- plus one strong song apiece from each of their first two albums ("That's What the Little Girls Do," "How Can Love Hurt So Much"), both of which probably should have been on the original compilation. Then again, Retrospective stretched to 17 songs, covering Round Trip and Serious Fun with some concentration, and Retrospective contains no less than four new songs: the solid original "She Says," a winning take on the infectious mock-Merseybeat "That Thing You Do!," and strong readings of two Nick Lowe tunes, "Teacher Teacher" and "I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock & Roll)." They're good songs and good performances, but they make the album feel less like a compilation, for better and for worse. Although I lost interest after thier 2nd album (mainly because of the introduction Harder/Glam Rock like Van Halen, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, etc) they still should have been supported better than they were. The reason I'm only giving "Best of" 3/5 stars is the lack of other songs off of "Get the" such as my favorite "She's so (Selfish)", "The Monkey and me", "Frustrated" and "Maybe Tonight". If you don't own any Knack, your better off buying "Get the" instead of "Best of". Don't agree? Branded as Beatle rip-offs, sexist beasts, and one-hit wonders, it's a wonder the band had the will to plug its guitars in let alone continue releasing albums. As the title suggests, PROOF is a telling document. Normally, when taken out of context, nearly every overnight sensation sounds like a quaint time capsule reminder of an era gone by. Not so with The Knack. The band's brand of power pop has aged not a whit. An intoxicating mixture adolescent rush and sexual frustration, this collection of biting three chord rave-ups still fairly leap into your lap.\n\nTaken in one large gulp, it's a staggering roll call of one-two punches: "My Sharona," "Good Girls Don't," "Your Number or Your Name," and "The Hard Way" all bubble and kick without apology. The band's later and lesser-known material often holds up to the same standard. Certainly, "Pay the Devil" and "Rocket o' Love" are not the work of washed up pretenders. PROOF merely recasts what the band initially accomplished: making jump-out-of-your-seat power pop. Nothing more, nothing less.
