In retrospect, the record is muddled and confused, nowhere more so than on the frazzled sequencing of "Temporary Secretary," where McCartney spits out ridiculous lyrics with a self-consciously atonal melody over gurgling synths. Things rarely get worse than that, and occasionally, as in the effortless hooksof "Coming Up," the record is quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, themajority of McCartney II is forced, and its lack of memorable melodies is accentuated by the stiff electronics, which were not innovative at the time and are even more awkward in the present. Atleast McCartney II finds Paul in an adventurous state of mind, which is a relief after years of formulaic pop. Abouttwelve years ago Capitol was selling a bundled boxset featuring McCartney, Ram, Red Rose Speedway, and McCartney II. That purchasewas the first time I ever heard McII. The album was released inthe wake of Wings' fiasco tour of 1980, when Wings suddenly disbanded following Paul's drug bust at a Japanese airport. There wereno Wings studio recordings, and Capitol needed product. Paul made all of these recordings at home during the summer of 1979, using all kinds of synthezers and voice-altering machines to create some creative tunes. I guess he never thought this would evolve into an album project. I agree with the reviewer suggesting this was an early techno album. The instrumental songs are a little longbut sound great--almost like they could have served as background music in a movie. "Waterfalls," "One of These Days" and "SummerDay's Song" far surpass most of the material on the first McCartney album imho. I doubt this cd will be reissued anytime soon dueto lack of an audience for it. Buy it if want to hear some goodhome recordings featuring Paul on all instruments, basically tinkering around with his machines. That's pretty much where thecomparison ends, though. While many of the cuts do have a light-hearted feel a la McCARTNEY, this is a much more song-oriented album, and is an unjustly overlooked entry in the McCartney catalogue.\n\nThe hit "Coming Up" is McCartney at his most infectious andebullient. "Temporary Secretary" is a humorous, very British-sounding tune that bears more than a little resemblance to the workof McCartney's former band (no, not Wings). McCartney gets to show off some bluesy guitar chops on the soulful "On The Way." Mostimportantly for as ballad-oriented as artist as McCartney, this album contains two of his most poignant '80s tunes, "Waterfalls" and "One of These Days."
