Kelly's follow-up to his epic double-disc R from 1998, the crooning lady's man scales back his artistic ambitions with TP-2.Com, an album harking back to his 12 Play album from 1993. It's not so surprising that Kelly attempts to write a sequel to 12 Play, a breakthrough album stacked with radio-friendly singles, rather than the overreaching scope of R, a disappointing album diluted by self-consciousness. This album's 19 songs may seem interchangeable at times in both lyrical and production terms, but Kelly manages to write some great songs that cut through the clutter. In particular, "I Wish" and the accompanying alternate version both stand out here as songs that break away from his usual romantic odes to sensuality. As he proves on nearly every song here, Kelly knows how to take proven formulas and funnel them through his own stylistic aesthetic, which usually means slowing down the tempo, laying on lush choruses of strings and background vocals, taming down the lyrics for radio, and catering his pitch primarily to wistful female listeners. TP-2.Com finds Kelly at his best as a pop artist, as he disregards the need to be "artistic" as he did on R, instead just focusing on giving the people precisely what they want: a consistent batch of well-crafted R&B odes to romance and sensuality, perfectly formatted for radio with plenty of hooks and the popular contemporary themes.YEAR: 1999 ID3G: 14
