Grateful Dead Dick's Picks Volume 14 Disc 1 (1973)
Dick's Picks, Vol. 14 - Disc 1 of 4\n1999 Grateful Dead Productions, Inc\n\nOriginally Released 1999\nRemastered Rhino CD Edition Released February 5, 2002\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Grateful Dead tape archivist Dick Latvala has not only picked the concerts in the Dick's Picks series, but also made editing decisions, and his choices on this four-CD set are liable to be controversial. The Dead's three-night stand in Boston in the fall of 1973, shortly after the release of Wake Of The Flood produced what most Dead Heads consider a good show (11/30), an off-night, more for the audience than the band (12/01), and a great show (12/02), the last mainly because of a particularly experimental "Mind Left Body" jam in the second set. Here, Latvala presents edited versions of the first and third nights (two CDs each), creating some interesting contrasts since, for example, 11/30 begins with "Morning Dew" and 12/02 ends with it, and each show features a long "Playing In The Band" and a performance of "Weather Report Suite" from Wake Of The Flood. The cuts are for the most part judicious, but some fans may question the consolidation of the shows. Still, at four discs, this is the longest Dick's Picks yet and may be testing the waters for even longer volumes that would be more complete. ~ William Ruhlmann\n \nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nOne of the odder collections in the Dick's Picks series, this four-disc set includes most of the music played on the first and last nights of a three-night run at Boston Music Hall in late fall 1973. With Donna Godchaux off the road to give birth, the band was back down to a quintet, and they're mostly found here in a mellow and airy vibe. Many of the tunes are taken at slower tempos than some fans may be used to--with the exception of "They Love Each Other," which is done here in a seldom-heard peppy style with additional verses that didn't make the final cut. There's some duplication of material as well, though you can't argue with any of the performances. --Marc Greilsamer \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nI've heard it all before, October 6, 2003 \nReviewer: kireviewer (Sunnyvale, Ca United States)\nSince Jerry Garcia's death, there have been over 40 live Grateful Dead albums released. Add to that, the live albums already released and you have about 60 albums to choose from. No two shows were exactly alike, but they did repeat songs from one show to the next. And for some songs, there was not a lot of variation in how they were played. One "Me and My Uncle" sounds pretty much like the next.\n\nThis CD consists of two complete concerts, played two days apart. The tour was in support of the Wake of The Dead album that was released just two months earlier. Morning Dew and the Weather Report Suite are repeated both nights. There isn't much difference on how these songs are played each night, so you do get some repeat here.\n\nThe band on this album is a stripped down, five piece band. Donna Godcheaux is on maternity leave and Micky Hart is not with the band. The band has starker, simpler sound. The Weather Report Suite reminds me of Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger album. Wier even sounds like Nelson in a few spots.\n\nThis is the same band and tour that is also on Dick's Picks Volume 1 and 24. If buy all 3 Dick's Picks, you get 4 concerts recorded within a 2 month span. Between them, all songs from the album Wake of the Flood get repeated at least twice. There isn't much difference in any of these songs from night to night. \n\nI don't know why it is necessary to release whole concerts. It would have been better to release a greatest hits album from the tour, instead of 4 complete concerts. Also, it it necessary to include all of the talking in between tracks? I guess it gives you the feeling of "being there". \n\nAlso, why do we need 4 concerts from a two month period, when there are many other periods in the Dead's history that still aren't covered. I have yet to see a concert CD featuring the real spacy, hour long Blues for Allah.\n\nThe one thing this two concert set does show, is that the Dead could be a lot better on one night than the next. The second show is much more interesting than the first, with a very nice Warf Rat and Playing in the Band.\n\nThere is nothing new on Volume 14 that hasn't been heard on other Dead albums (except for the a nice five minute piece of the Jam, and the Beer Barrel Polka). There are many, many other choices that are better than this. I would start with the excellent So Many Roads. This is a boxset, done right. It features some of the best versions of each song. Next choice would be Without A Net. It also features most of the songs from Wake Of the Flood, but they get a nice updated treatment.\n\nThis isn't a bad album, it's just pointless. All the songs are available elsewhere, either done the same or much better. Each disc is over 70 minutes long and the sound quality is good, although the mix is bad in some places, especially on the second show. Wier's vocals are way out in front in some spots, and you get an ocassional guitar blast here and there. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\na great collection from two nights, April 7, 2004 \nReviewer: B. J Lam "lamb@hallevans.com" (littleton, colorado United States) \nMany are dismissive of this Pick and I suggest that they could not be more wrong. Yes, the music has an overall mellowness to it and is mostly laid back, but there is brilliance in the delivery at every turn.\n\nFirst, the booklet notes explain that, incredibly, the band's itinerary was confused, causing the band to almost miss its Nov. 30 show. As it was they showed up late for it! Thus, the first song here, Morning Dew, was a sort of sound check for the band. The entire first cd has lots of between song chatter, which I like, and by the time of Dire Wolf and Black Throated Wind (BTW), the hour is late, the band has a "what the hell" attitude and the mellowness is contagious. I'm no fan of BTW and I think that this may be the best recording of it I've heard. The first set closes with PlayingITB and because Donna is on maternity leave, it is a very enjoyable ending to cd one.\n\nCD two has the excellent Here Comes Sunshine and Eyes of the World, but here the songs, which at this time are very new, lack a certain focus that the band applied later, especially to Eyees. Both arre used as spacce out jam fests (especially Eyes) and they lose some of their energy, if not their beauty, presented on other DPs and live Dead. Generally, the less said about WRS, the better, but here the song is still fresh and new to the band and it shows. This cd ends with a very strong Sugar. While I like cd 2, it is my least favorite of this four cd set.\n\nCD 3 is from the Dec. 2 show and, I suggest, is one of the best first sets in the entire DP collection. Brown Eyed Women and Ramble on Rose are great songs and are rarely found, especially together and without Donna. \n\nCD 4 is awesome. The PlayingITB dissolves entirely into a spacey jam and out of it evolves a fantastic slide guitar solo by Jerry that sounds hauntingly familiar, but I cannot place the tune. Any way it's all fantastic. He's Gone especially and Truckin are both great. And then... when you look at the last two songs, Stella and Morning, you may think that this is a really boring way to end the concert. But remember, these cds have an over-all mellowness to them and this ending is in keeping perfectly with what has come before. And the best part is that the Morning builds ever slow slowly to a fantastic crescendo -- the result of a tension building march that is finally released by the band. Maybe the best Morning Dew that I've heard by the boys.\n\nOne nit to pick is that the booklet is sparse and not that well done for a four cd set. Throughout the musicianship is very good. Especailly of note are both Phil's bass and Keith's piano. And most importantly Jerry's voice sounds oh so sweet. He is in his prime here both in voice and on guitar. You will get a great feel for the band's progression in this era by listening to DP 14, DP 1 and then DP 7. By far this is one of my favorite live Dead collections. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nDifferent, yet an absolute must-have for Nor'East heads, December 23, 2003 \nReviewer: Try try try to understand... "seidur" (Portland, Maine Observatory) \nWicked Good! During a weird transition for the band, some great music is preserved in this 4 CD set. PigPen has recently passed. You have the band (minus Mickey and Donna), the crew, and the audience all getting involved in this Beantown Barn Burner. Everyone is loose and having fun and it comes right through the speakers as if it were happening through the nearest wormhole or right around the corner. Imageries of ghosts of colonial patriots dressed as indians dancing to the beat of their own little tea-party, unbeknownst to some of the drunken crowd as the dead break into "Beer Barrel Polka"... Let it be said that deadheads are not usually known for booze. There must have been a bar in the back of the hall. Some cool moments are captured as Bobby tests the equipment, "whooping" up sound checks between songs as Phil cracks jokes and fools with the audience as the crew work with a scaled down version of "the wall of sound" to fit into the music hall. Rowdy crowd yet very intimate. Collected from 2 nights, I prefer to start with disc 3 and end with 2 (3->4->1->2). "Cold Rain and Snow" begins, turn it up, and 'Boogie'!! It sounds sooo good! Man, what fun! \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nDick's Picks Only Get Better From Here, July 19, 2002\nReviewer: "pmbellocq" (Slidell, LA USA)\nI should have paid more attention to the lowest rated reviews for this one, as I bought this one used and somewhat regret it. Parts of this set sounds downright lethargic, almost to the point of sounding drunk. If it were not for the second CD and a few other good moments, this would be a two-star effort. By itself, it is not really a bad set of 4 CD's, but it's just that almost any other live Grateful Dead CD's will have better versions than what is presented here. This set also has the distinction of having one of the worst versions of Playin' In The Band that I have ever heard. If you don't believe me, simply load up your jukebox with all of your live Gratedful Dead CD's and then program the same songs such they can play back to back. I honestly don't see how any music fan could choose the versions from this set over any of the other available live CD's (I am not into taping, as you have probably already guessed). As for those of you who really like the very laid back Dead shows, all is not lost. I can recommend Dick's Picks 19, which has a crystal clear sound and was recorded about two months prior to this set. That set has a laid back feel due to the heavier jazz influence. Pass on this one, as this is the worst one that I have heard from the Dick's Picks series. Still in all, bad DP is better than most other music out there.\n\nHalf.com Album Credits\nBill Candelario, Engineer\n\nAlbum Notes\nDICK'S PICKS VOLUME FOURTEEN is the fourteenth in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers."\n\nGrateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Keith Godchaux (keyboards); Bill Kreutzmann (drums).\n\nRecorded at Boston Music Hall, Boston, Massacusetts on November 30, 1973 & December 2, 1973.\n\nIncludes liner notes by Michael J. Sanditen.\n\nAll tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
This rock cd contains 8 tracks and runs 70min 5sec.
