Steve Perry: Greatest Hits (Remastered + Expanded) CD Track Listing
Steve Perry
Greatest Hits (Remastered + Expanded) (2006)
Greatest Hits (Remastered + Expanded)\n\nOriginally Released December 15, 1998\nRemastered + Expanded CD Edition Released October 3, 2006\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: At the time that Columbia Records released Steve Perry's Greatest Hits + Five Unreleased, the former Journey lead singer had scored exactly one Top Ten hit as a solo artist ("Oh Sherrie")and placed four other songs in the Top 40, one of which ("Foolish Heart") reached the Top Ten of the adult contemporary charts. It was not the sort of record that would seem to justify the release of a 17-track hits collection. In addition to the hits, the set included assorted album tracks from Perry's two solo albums, Street Talk (1984) and For The Love Of Strange Medicine (1994); a couple of songs from the Quest For Camelot soundtrack; four tracks recorded in 1988 for his intended second album, Against The Wall ("Unfortunately, it was never released," he noted tersely); and the 1977 demo recording that led to Perry' s joining Journey. While the collection certainly presented the best of Steve Perry so far as well as some interesting curiosities, it hardly lived up to the usual standard expected of an album called Greatest Hits, simply because Perry's hadn't scored enough hits to have a Greatest Hits album. Either this was a stopgap release to keep the singer's name before the public or a contractual obligation, the latter justification being indicated by the odd release date in mid-December. -- William Ruhlmann\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nHits and Misses, May 1, 2001 \nReviewer: Joe Lee from Brandon, MS USA \nSteve Perry's "Street Talk" was released in 1984 at the crest of Journey's popularity, and it garnered the vocalist a Top Five smash in "Oh Sherrie" as well as several other hit singles. Ten years passed before his next solo release, which included the hit rocker "You Better Wait." As the liner notes explain, most of the rest of the unreleased tracks were written for another solo project which never got off the ground. The final track was written around 1977 and sounds as much like Journey as just about anything on the CD.\n\nPerry is an adept if somewhat generic writer, and a brilliant vocalist. He shines in his ability to take somewhat ordinary love songs and turn them into classics with his emotional commitment to them. What's missing on this set, however, is the kind of love song like "Faithfully" or "Who's Crying Now." The songs just aren't terribly compelling, and moreover, the backing band - while thoroughly competent - just doesn't have the classic Cain/Schon sound which boosted Perry's work with Journey. It may not sound like much, but that detail hurts a great many of these songs and renders them ordinary. \n\nAmazon.com Custumer Review\nI never get tired of Steve's voice, December 20, 1998 \nReviewer: JRNYCSB@AOL.COM from Temecula, CA USA \nThis CD is like getting a "Greatest Hits" and a new album all in one!!! The songs you know by heart are all here, and digitally remastered to boot, so they sound better than ever. And, it is really 8 songs that most people have never heard--including B-sides, demos, and songs from his unreleased "Against the Wall" CD from 1988. Steve really shows his versatility on calypso flavored R&B tunes, slow ballads, and powerfull straight-ahead rock material. If you are a fan of Journey, 80's power ballad bands, or just a fan of a great voice, this album is definetely one for your collection. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because of the lack of printed lyrics--it really should be 4.5 stars. \n\nHalf.com Album Credits\nDavid Foster, Contributing Artist\n\nAlbum Notes\nContains 7 previously unreleased tracks from the studio sessions for the unissued album AGAINST THE WALL recorded in January 1988 and a previously unreleased demo.\n\nPersonnel: Steve Perry (vocals); Adrian Gurvitz (guitar, piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Mike Landau, Michael Thompson, Stevey DeLacey, Lincoln Brewster, Waddy Wachtel, Billy Steele, Craig Hull (guitar); Steve Douglas (saxophone); Randy Goodrum (piano, keyboards, drum programming); David Foster (piano, synthesizer, keyboards); Tim Miner (piano, synthesizer, bass); Bill Cuomo, Paul Taylor, Steve Goldstein, Sterling Smith, Scott Thurston (piano, synthesizer); Bob Glaub, Randy Jackson, Richard Michaels, Larry Kimpel, Chuck\n\nDomanico, Brian Garafalo (bass); Larrie London, John Robinson, Moyes Lucas, Jr., Craig Krampf (drums); Tony Brock (drum programming).\n\nProducers include: Steve Perry, David Foster, Carol Bayer Sager, Randy Goodrum, Tim Miner.\n\nEngineers include: Niko Bolas, Humberto Gatica, Chris Lord-Alge.\n\nIncludes liner notes by Steve Perry.\n\nFormer Journey bandmate Jonathan Cain once observed that "God gave Steve a voice that rings like a bell," neatly encapsulating this AOR vet's lasting appeal. His arrival in Journey took the band from obscurity to superstardom, and their attempt to carry on with another singer in the wake of his departure inspires fond thoughts of the post-Jim Morrison Doors. A glance at the title makes it clear that Columbia's not shy about the marketing hook here. Hardcore Perry fans will jump at the chance to hear previously unavailable tracks like "Summer of Luv" and the demo of "If You Need Me, Call Me." Likewise, newbies will be drawn to the perfect pop of "Oh Sherrie" and "Foolish Heart." The connecting thread, Perry's almost unjustly soulful voice, is the distinctive, defining element in these smooth, radio-ready arrangements.
This rock cd contains 18 tracks and runs 75min 19sec.
