Jerry Lee Lewis
Killer: The Mercury Years - Volume Three 1973-1977 (1989)
1989 Mercury Records, Inc.\n\nOriginally Released October 20, 1989\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: N/A\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nHardly The Best Of His Mercury Years, March 12, 2003 \nReviewer: AvidOldiesCollector "George O'Leary" (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)\n\nLet's see - between 1969 and 1972 [the years covered in this compilation] Jerry Lee had 15 Country charters for the Mercury/ Smash label. So what do they do? Put out a collection of 24 selections and only include two that went anywhere - When He Walks On You (Like You Walked On Me) - # 11 in 1971, and Me And Bobby McGee - which was a "follow-along" charter back of Would You Take Another Chance On Me? - a # 1 in late 1971/early 1972.\n\nThe rest are either failed singles or obscure album cuts, and while not a bad compilation in itself [Jerry Lee never fails to entertain], isn't this sort of a curious approach to the market? I mean, if the cuts didn't sell in the first place what makes the producers think people are going to rush out to buy them today?\n\nWhere are Roll Over Beethoven [# 71 in 1970 with Linda Gail], In Loving Memories [# 48 in 1971], Love On Broadway [# 31 in 1971],and Lonely Weekends [# 11 in 1972]? All hard-to-find Jerry Lee Mercury hits. \n\nOn the bright side there are seven full pages of liner notes written by Hank Davis for this 1989 release, along with three nice shots of Jerry Lee. My particular favourites in this compilation are his renditions of the Hank Williams tune Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used To Do?], the Ivory Joe Hunter hit Since I Met You Baby, and Reuben James which, in my opinion anyway, surpasses the hit Kenny Rogers version. And Blue Suede Shoes is probably the best of any version of the Perkins hit.\n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nProducers: Jerry Kennedy, Huey P. Meaux, Stan Kesler, Charlie Fach.Includes liner notes by Hank Davis.
