Quicksilver Messenger Service Just For Love (1970)
1992 One Way Records\n\nOriginally Released August 1970\nOne Way CD Edition Released September 11, 1992\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: With the return of Gary Duncan and the recording debut of founder Dino Valenti, Just for Love, Quicksilver's fourth album, marked their debut as the band they were intended to be. The ironic thing about that is that, led by singer/songwriter Valenti, they were a much more pop-oriented band than their fans had come to expect. On Just for Love, Quicksilver finally was Valenti's backup group (he wrote all but one of the songs), and while this gave them greater coherence and accessibility, as well as their only Top 50 single in "Fresh Air," it also made them less the boogie band they had been. And it meant the band's days were numbered. -- William Ruhlmann\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nFor the Love of Quicksilver, July 23, 2002 \nReviewer: steve_seim from Beaver Dam, WI United States \nUnlike the psychedelic folk-rock of their earlier releases, "Just For Love" features the bluesy keyboard work of Rolling Stones session-man Nicky Hopkins. As a result, this album is less San Francisco acid-rock, and more progressive blues-rock along the lines of Traffic and Procol Harum. A great American release for fans of the British sound. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\n"This here next one's rock and roll.", May 10, 2001 \nReviewer: David A. Rivera, MD from Lombard, IL USA \nIf Just For Love is your first exposure to Quicksilver, check out Happy Trails for the best of Quicksilver's "drug-addled nonsense." I'm glad this one is finally on CD, albeit as an import. It's a pity record labels seem to be so short-sighted. A few tracks are available on the Sons of Mercury collection, but it just ain't the same... \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nOh Please!, July 4, 2000 \nReviewer: A music fan from Houston, TX USA \nOh please! Quicksilver was not on the periphery and Dave Henderson, whoever he is, dont know squat! This was a dynamite band and "Just For Love" was a fine recording for its time and place. My circle of friends and I played the wheels off this record. So there. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nDrug addled nonsense?, February 4, 2000 \nReviewer: Jason Kettler from St. Louis, MO \nThis album is drug-addled nonsense? Most of what popular music was in the late 60's was drug-addled nonsense. I think this is a pretty intense and psychedelic album that isn't all just ramblings. "Cobra" by Cipollina, for example, is a pretty tight song that displays his incredible tremolo guitar techinique. "Just For Love pts 1 & 2" are very colorful, and "Fresh Air" just plain rocks. Valente takes a bit of getting used to, but he really can wail. Oh yeah, it was the cover art that originally made me buy the album from the $1 bin at my local used-LP store. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nAn absolute must have for the fans of the San Fran sound, October 2, 1999 \nReviewer: An Amazon.com Customer \nRecorded in Hawaii, this album features legendary sessions keyboardist Niki Hopkins. The sound is definately late 60's! "(Have another hit of) Fresh Air" is one of many standouts on the recording. For a flash from the past, this is good addition for the serious collector. \n\nHalf.com Album Credits\nNicky Hopkins, Contributing Artist\nDan Healy, Engineer\nJohn Palladino, Producer\n\nAlbum Notes\nQuicksilver Messenger Service: Gary Duncan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, maracas); Dino Valenti (vocals, guitar, congas, flute); David Frieberg (vocals, guitar, bass); John Cipollina (guitar); Gregory Elmore (drums, percussion).\n\nAdditional personnel: Nicky Hopkins (piano).\n\nRecorded at the Opaelua Lodge, Haleiwa, Hawaii in May & June 1970.
