At Saturday's show the \r\nopening chords of this concert rarity were met by tumultuous \r\napplause from many of the usual suspects seated in the front row. \r\nI don't think any of us could believe what we were hearing.\r\nVan genuinely seemed to enjoy the song and gave his guitar a \r\nmore thorough pounding than I've seen in some time. And it \r\nhappened. That realisation that you are seeing and hearing \r\nsomething very special - something in fact that you might never \r\nexperience more than once or twice in a lifetime of concert going.\r\nThat feeling of warmth you get when music stops washing over \r\nyou and penetrates your very being, the feeling you get when you \r\nstop just hearing the music and start feeling it. Maybe I was the \r\nonly one with tears in my eyes and maybe not, but I know that \r\nthere are enough fans out there who know what I'm talking about\r\nthat I don't mind admitting the moist eyes - and me a one time tight \r\nhead prop forward!\r\nOn Sunday night, forewarned perhaps by the previous night's \r\nsetlist, the song seemed to get an even bigger response from the \r\ncrowd and Van and the band rose to the occasion. The jury is out \r\non which of the two shows were the better, but for me a haunting \r\nrendition of All In The Game on Sunday evening swung the \r\nbalance.\r\nNo - Johnny Scott wasn't on stage. No - there was no Pee Wee \r\nEllis. No - this may not be the most technically proficient band that \r\nVan has ever toured with, but on Saturday and Sunday night there \r\nwere seven guys on that stage playing like they meant it and \r\nplaying it damned good too. On the down side - hey there's always \r\na downside - on Saturday night Van asked for requests and a \r\nfemale voice called out "Why don't you play something by Van\r\nMorrison". On Sunday night a male heckler demanded "Play \r\nsomething we know" - this in the middle of Brown Eyed Girl. Who \r\nare these people and what do they want? Both nights had more of \r\nthe Greatest Hits than I wanted to hear and still they complain. \r\nBrian Mallaghan.\r\nBrian sums it all up there very neatly, methinks. We've hit a groove \r\nof shows with similar setlists and feel, and the same satisfying \r\noutcome. With Van on top form at present and giving his all in \r\nterms of vocal strength and improv, we can hope for little more \r\napart from a completely acoustic show, but then that ain't gonna \r\nhappen. A few more of those delicious classics we haven't heard \r\nfor a while would be most agreeable, acoustic or electric, but as \r\nlong as we get the odd Listen To The Lion or Streets Of Arklow \r\nthen most of us are happy (ish).
