Rezillos Can't Stand The Rezillos: The (Almost) Complete Rezillos (1978)
Originally Released March 23, 1993\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: The 1993 re-release of the Rezillos' sole album as such lives up to its name perfectly -- Can't Stand the Rezillos: The (Almost) Complete Rezillos is indeed almost the complete collection of work that the band officially released during its heyday-of-punk lifetime. As such it's an absolute killer, divided between the original Can't Stand the Rezillos album and the live Mission Accomplished album, along with both sides of the "Destination Venus"/"Mystery Action" single. Ira Robbins' detailed and appreciative band history also makes note of what's missing for completists' sakes -- the original recording of "I Can't Stand My Baby," a remake of the Beatles' "I Wanna Be Your Man," "20,000 Rezillos Under the Sea," and the single version of "Top of the Pops." There's one other excision -- the live "Destination Venus" had to be dropped from Mission Accomplished to fit everything else on the disc. But the end result really can't be argued with -- the remastering of the studio tracks is solid, the live tracks, while not recorded as clearly as they could have been, get shined up as best as they can. The bemusing killer touch is J Mascis's brief scrawl of appreciation -- if anything, he maintains his reputation for being as reticent in print as he is in real life (but his claim that this could be the best bass playing on the Sire label is probably accurate). ~ Ned Raggett\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nGreat album, bad reissue., December 6, 1999 \nReviewer: James Burns (Bellingham, WA)\nFirst, the good news: The Rezillos were an amazing band. At their best they embodied the perfect blend of buzzsaw punk and quirky new wave, with some groovy 60's rock thrown in for good measure. Is there an album in existence that has the killer opening one-two-three punch comparable to "Flying Saucer Attack," "No," and "Somebodies Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight?" No. Can you find better bass playing anywhere (if you say "Primus," you will be drawn and quartered)? No. Unfortunately, the rerelease of this album is a cluttered mess. I would have much preferred just the 13 songs of "Can't Stand The Rezillos" to the 28 songs we get here. Sure, it's nice to get more for your money, but the live songs, when compared to the recorded versions, are lifeless (listen to the half-hearted backing vocals on the live version of "...Kicked In Tonight"), not to mention that the sound quality is almost non-existent. Still, "Can't Stand The Rezillos" is a must-have if you're into 70's punk. Just make a tape of it that ends after track 13. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nI would give this more stars if I could!, April 16, 2004 \nReviewer: "kileina_hana" (GA United States)\nSome of the other reviewers cite this album as a must-have for any punk or psychobilly collection. I agree--but really, it's a must-have for *any* collection!\n\nMy boyfriend asked me for a Rezillos CD for his birthday, so I bought this one. I'd never heard of them before, so after he'd blown out his candles and disposed of the pile of wrapping paper on the floor, we popped the album in for a listen. Madness ensued. 75 minutes later (give or take), I knew I had a new favorite band. I listened to Can't Stand the Rezillos during my 45-minute commute a couple of days later, and it ended up accompanying me to work every day for the next two weeks. I just couldn't take it out of the CD player--I mean, what could beat cruising down the freeway at 80mph, dancing and singing along with the most fun band that ever existed? \n\nThe Rezillos are reminiscent of a weird Ramones/B-52s amalgamation--as fun as the Ramones, but more coherent--and as weird as the B-52s, but in my opinion much more listenable. They are, to me, the best possible combination of punk and new wave the late 70s had to offer. The distinctive style of the Rezillos' music, combined with stellar bass lines and enthusiastic vocals, makes for a non-stop barrage of super-fun songs that will make you want to jump around and dance--no matter how many of your fellow motorists on the highway are pointing and laughing at you while you do it. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nAn overlooked gem, February 23, 2004\nReviewer: M. Bromberg "dashbitters" (Atlanta, GA United States)\nAn extra star for the expanded release -- a band just as fun as the Ramones, and they were Sire Records label-mates, too! Great hypersonic covers, funny originals, and unstoppable energy that never lets up. The rockabilly romper-stomper "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight" is an original by Fleetwood Mac's Jeremy Spencer (!!) when he was performing as Earl Vince and the Valiants in the early '60s. Wonder where Fay and Jo found that one??\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nReally energetic, fun..., May 25, 2003\nReviewer: M. Grindell "mark_grindell" (Shipley,West Yorkshire)\nThe reason for this being what it is it's age. The rezillos were a slightly unstable band that changed their name and morphed through several years and on reflection, probably really were creatures of the seventies, a sort of late band from that very thin era when John Peel was playing all that new stuff, and wasn't so fed up as he got ten years later. It was a time when there this kind of afterwash of inspiration from the "pop" era, and honestly, there WAS a lot of zippy stuff about, The Cars, John Cooper Clarke, etc, where people thought they actually had a duty to get you really excited. Also, (I want to rub this in a bit and rant), everyone actually sounded different - they were clever in their own way and weren't stupid by default. This lot, for instance, they just hammer it home, but inside they're still eight years old and proud of it...\nA lot of this has been forgotten now. "Rock" (is that the right word?) is now dull beyond comprehension, and has sounded the same for the last 15 years or so. But - This music is very fresh, very addictive, unprofessional, underproduced, dancable and just clever - in a way you are never, EVER going to hear again. I don't know what has happened to these guys, but I would love to know. Unfortunately, whatever they did, they did not pass on the fire to anyone else. All this wonderful stuff is now part of a past that is never going to come back and I wish I was 19 again and could GET to Glasgow and be there when this was happening at the time. I mean, if in the future somone invents time travel, there are going to be places where you want to be, and this would definitely be one of them....\n\nHalf.com Album Credits\nTim Summerhayes, Engineer\n\n\nAlbum Notes\nContains the band's debut album, CAN'T STAND THE REZILLOS, both sides of a UK-only single and their UK-only live album, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED...BUT THE BEAT GOES ON.\n\nPersonnel: Eugene Reynolds, Fay Fife (vocals); John Callis (guitar, vocals); William Mysterious (bass, saxophone); Simon Templar (bass); Angel Paterson (drums); Gail Warning (background vocals).\n\nProducers include: Bob Clearmountain, Tony Bongiovi, Lance Quinn, The Rezillos, Martin Rushent.\n\nTracks 16-28 recorded live at the Glasgow Apollo on December 23, 1978 and engineered by Tim Summerhayes. \n\nIncludes liner notes by Ira Robbins.\nDigitally remastered by Lee Herschberg.
