Marcy Playground Marcy Playground (1997)
My name is John Wozniak and I sing and write\nthe songs for Marcy Playground. During the late\n70's I lived with my family in Minneapolis and\nwentto the Marcy Open School. It was one in a\ngroup of experimental hippie schools that had\nopened in Minneapolis at the start of the decade.\nI was seven, and more or less a shy kid. I would\nsit in the back of the classroom, listen to records,\nand play with the guinea pigs; I never hurt anyone.\nDuring that time, there were some kids who\nwanted to beat me up; real mean kids from my\nneighborhood. When it came time in the day for\nrecess I was too afraid to go out onto the\nplayground because I knew these kids were\nwaiting for me. So I stayed upstairs in the\nclassroom, looked out of the window, and\nlistened to "Free To Be You and Me." From the\nwindow Icould see the whole playground and\neveryone on it. Everything happening at once. I\nmade up stories about what I saw, and who I\nsaw. Although theexperience was ultimately\ndepressing, I found within it a foundation fora\nfuture self. The strange way in which I see the\nworld today can be directly traced back to the\ntime when, as a little boy, I sat paralyzed by the\nunfortunate realities of life as I looked out of a\nschool window anddown onto the Marcy\nPlayground. \n\nIn a strange bit of coincidence, Dylan Keefe was\nalso growing up in the Minneapolis "open" school\nsystem at that very time. We never met though,\nsince he attended Marcy's sister school on the\nother side of town - The Lake Harriet Open\nProgram. It wasn'tuntil 16 years later that we\nwould meet on New York City's Lower East\nSide, introduced by a mutual friend (jazz guitarist\nKurt Rosenwinkel). We became fast friends.\nSoon we were talking about starting a new band.\nAfter a brief stint playing with several drummers,\nwe realized that Dylan's long-time friend, Dan\nReiser, would be better suited for our band than\nanybody else. Dan and Dylan, who began playing\ntogether seven years ago ata college in Boston,\nhad both moved to New York to pursue lives in\nmusic. Together, they formed the core rhythm\nsection for many successful NYC\nsinger/songwriters. By the time we got together,\nboth were weary of the "side-man" gig, and\nwanted to strike out with a band of their own YEAR: 1997
