Art Garfunkel Scissors Cut (1981)
Originally Released August 1981\nCD Edition Released May 29, 1990\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: After the disappointment of Fate for Breakfast, Art Garfunkel returned to old friends for his fifth solo album, co-producing with Roy Halee, who had worked with Simon And Garfunkel and on Garfunkel's debut album, Angel Clare, and singing several songs written by Jimmy Webb, who had written nearly all the songs on Garfunkel's third album, Watermark. But though Scissors Cut came closer to the sound of a good Garfunkel album, material remained a problem. "A Heart in New York," the LP's sole American chart single, was second-rate, as were many of the other compositions, Garfunkel scored a surprise number one hit in Great Britain with the Mike Batt-written and produced "Bright Eyes," the theme from the movie Watership Down, but that wasn't enough to make the album on the whole a success, Garfunkel then re-teamed with Paul Simon for a world concert tour, and it was five years before he was back in record stores with the seasonal release The Animals' Christmas and nearly seven years before his next regular solo album, Lefty. -- William Ruhlmann\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nScissors Cut, Hearts Broken, February 16, 2005\nReviewer: Mr. K. O'brien (Blackpool, Lancashire United Kingdom)\nArt Garfunkel's 1981 offering is one of his most overlooked pieces of music. It is filled with fairly low-key production, and is certainly far away from what 1981 is famous for. That is, somehow, make it feel all that more special. \n\nComing closely after the death of his girlfriend, it is natural several songs are related to her ('In Cars', especially, in which Paul Simon adds vocals), and the aspect of lost love, or doubt about love does tend to dominate the album, in fact it is dedicated to his loss. \n\nHaving said that, there are some superb tunes here, including the album opener A Heart In New York (of which superb live versions exist on Concert In Central Park and the brilliant Across America) and the ever so sweet Can't Turn My Heart Away. \n\nIn Cars is a Jimmy Webb effort, and includes lyrics from Scarborough Fair from years gone by ~ Remember me to one who lives there, She once was a true love of mine ~ As stated earlier, directed at his lost partner, but Jimmy's best effort here is Scissors Cut, a wonderful ballad of two lost lovers. \n\nSome songs on here can sometimes feel a little unnecessary, though The Romance (which rarely appears on this album in the UK or US) is brilliant, featuring soaring vocals from Art, it is unmissable, so if it is not on your album, make sure you find it! \n\nIn all, this is not Art's best solo effort, but the theme and general sound can often take you far away from reality ~ And sometimes that is needed! Any Art fan should have this album.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nA real hodge-podge, half a good album, September 17, 2003\nReviewer: David Pearlman "sound fanatic" (Arlington, MA United States)\nGarfunkel's in good voice on this album, but the material often lets him down. Basically, there are five good songs on the album:\nUp in the World, Bright Eyes, Can't Turn My Heart Away, French Waltz and That's All I've Got to Say. Of these, three (Bright Eyes, Can't Turn and That's All) rank with the best that Garfunkel has recorded. But the other five? Some real stinkers, even from such normally estimable sources as Jimmy Webb. Heart In New York is pleasant but goes nowhere, Scissors Cut and In Cars, both Webb compositions, are real sleep inducing duds, and Hang on In is the worst kind of vauous stab at being comptemporary circa 1981. \nMostly for completists and hardcore fans. Others should get Watermark, Angel Claire or Breakaway first. Or try Everything waits to get noticed, the best album Garfunkel has released since the '70s.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nScissors Cut One of Best Albums of 1981 - Rolling Stone, February 19, 2003\nReviewer: Greg B (Edmonton, Alberta Canada)\nThis album seemed to get lost in the hype of the Simon and Garfunkel reunion of September 1981; SC was released in August 1981. SC is an under appreciated work of art. It has ten songs you probably won't find anywhere else, interpreted masterfully with regards to phrasing, emotion, tone quality, pitch, etc. On top of Garfunkel's usual brilliance on the ballads, this album contains a hard-driving rock number - Hang On In (my favorite).
This rock cd contains 10 tracks and runs 32min 15sec.
