T. Rex Work In Progress (Rhino Deluxe Edition) - Disc 1 of 2 (2003)
Work In Progress (Rhino Deluxe Edition) - Disc 1 of 2\n2006 Rhino Records, Inc.\n\nOriginally Released as Edsel 2CD Expanded Edition on August 5, 2003\nRhino 2CD Expanded Edition Released January 24, 2006\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Marc Bolan recorded a lot -- so much, it seems, that he documented every time he picked up a guitar, whether it was at home or in the studio. Over the years, much of this has come out, most notably in the T. Rex Unchained series, which spans a mind-boggling 16 volumes (and this doesn't even include the rarities and outtakes that appeared on expanded versions of the proper albums). Unchained is a hardcore fan's delight, but it is nearly impossible to navigate for anybody who doesn't have prior knowledge of Bolan minutia, or who doesn't have the time and patience to sort it all out. That's where this double-disc, Work in Progress, comes in -- it distills the series to 55 highlights, offering a disc of recordings Bolan made at home, and a disc that he recorded in the studio with T. Rex. This is still quite lengthy, but the difference is that it's sharply chosen and sequenced, so it's as enjoyable as a regular T. Rex collection, albeit one with varying quality of fidelity and performances. There are no lost classics on either disc, and sometimes the tracks don't amount to more than a sketch of an idea, but it's all charming and tuneful; Bolan would throw away hooks other bands would kill to have, and it all sounds effortless, which, given the number of Bolan's unreleased recordings, it probably was. For those who want to dig a little deeper than the albums but don't have the bottle to slog through all the Unchained discs -- or for those who want a collection of highlights from that archival series -- Work in Progress delivers in spades. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine\n\nAmazon.com Product Description\nHere we present the best of his ''work in progress'' from 1972 until his death in 1977. Both discs are arranged chronologically, the first being dedicated to his private home demos (33 tracks), whilst the second features the songs he took to the studio to work on with his band (22 tracks). Includes a 16-page full color booklet with extensive annotation by Bolan expert Martin Barden. Digipak. Edsel Records. 2003. \n\nAmazon.com Product Description\nThe phenomenally popular and influential T.Rex spearheaded the glam-rock movement, a genre owing everything to its quintessential superstar, Marc Bolan. Rivaled only by Bowie, whose own glam period followed in their flamboyant footsteps, Bolan and T.Rex created an incredible vibe and sound whose legacy lives. Driven by primal grooves, effortless hooks, trippy vocals, and deliciously fat guitar riffs, their music was both infused with hippie spirituality and raw sexuality-a rich, ripe, sonic delight both primitive and evolved. While their music defined an era, their irresistible grooves are timeless, and Bolan's later, more experimental tracks, marrying pop genius with creative expansion and proto-punk power, underscore his groundbreaking artistry. \n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGood, but not good enough, May 2, 2004\nReviewer: Ralph Ferdingstadt (Ashland, OR)\nThis represents the first SERIOUS effort to cut out the mountain of fat in the sea of "unreleased" material Bolan had the sense to leave that way, for the most part, in his lifetime. (No, I'm afraid the so-called, Best of the Unchained Series, was nothing more than an exploitation; no better than Messin' With the Mystic -- another unhinged collection of outtakes from the latter half of Bolan's career.) This set still has way too much dross, and worse, far too few of the true gems that exist. But I suppose one should expect no less: Did you really think they'd give you ALL the worthwhile stuff on one two CD set, with so much cash remaining to be siphoned off an unsuspecting music-buying public? No doubt to the compiler, this is an "honest" collection of what Bolan was "really like" when he wasn't playing what he knew was his best. One wonders what other "honest" music he thinks worthy of our attention (and hard-earned) when in a perfect world, a DECENT collection of the best o' Bolan's rest would look something like this: \n\ndisc 1 1972-1973 \nAlligator Man \nMeadows of the Sea \nMr. Motion (version 2) \nCity Port (Fast Punk) \nFast Blues - Easy Acton \nDark-Lipped Woman \nOrgan Thing (instrumental) \nAll My Love (version I) \nThis is My Life \nBig Black Cat \nDown Home Lady (version I) \nSky Church Music \nDance In the Midnight (version II) \nAll My Love (version II) \nHope Your Enjoy the Show (version II) \nI'm Coming to Rock 'n' Roll \nHigh Wire \nYesterday (Everyday) (version I) \nSad Girl \nJet Tambourine \nDance In the Midnight (version III) \nSaturation Syncopation (All Alone) (version I) \n\ndisc 2 1974-1977 \nBolan's Zip Gun \nLove For Me \nDepth Charge \nKing of the Mountain Cometh \nSwahili Boogie Woman (version I) \nBaby Please, Baby Squeeze \nIt's My City \nSwahili Boogie Woman (version II) \nRiff \nI'm a VooDoo Man \nLondon Boys \nOver You Babe \nRiff \nWherever You Go \nIt's Alright \n21st Century Stance \nMessing With The Mystic \nSailors of the Highway\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nNice Summary of Unreleased Bolan , March 20, 2006\nReviewer: Frank C. Tortorici (Garwood, NJ United States) \nThis CD is a great starting point for Bolan fans who have none of his myriad officially unreleased work. For those of us who know he was more brilliant than given credit for and already own some of the hundreds of his unreleased songs, this new CD may contain some duplication. But recommended anyway. \n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nRecorded between 1972 & 1977. Includes liner notes by Martin Barden.\nMarc Bolan & T. Rex: Marc Bolan (vocals, guitar); Gloria Jones (vocals).
This rock cd contains 33 tracks and runs 66min 1sec.
