Philonous Chevalier (1997)
Philonous plays rootsy rock with elements of folk, blues, and psychadelia. Featuring lyrical depth and addictive hooks, Philonous' music is sometimes compared to Violent Femmes, Bruce Cockburn, and Elliot Smith. Philonous (pronounced "feh-lo-nus") is the musical alter-ego of professional philosopher, Dr. James Spiegel (Ph.D., Michigan State University). By day he teaches classes, does research and writes articles for scholarly journals. He has published a book, Hypocrisy: Moral Fraud and Other Vices (Baker, 1999) and numerous journal articles on issues in ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of religion. By night he is a studio hermit who creates his music in his basement, where he also occasionally produces and engineers other artists (e.g., Ashworth, Jackie Fly, Travis Vanest, Caustic Imminence).
