Genesis Three Sides Live (Disc 1) (1982)
Three Sides Live - Disc 1 of 2\n1985 Atlantic Recording Corporation\n\nOriginally Released June 1982\nCD Edition Released April 1985\nRemastered, Reconfigured CD Edition Released October 1994 \n\nAll tracks recorded live in Europe and USA during 1981\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: On its third live album (another double), Genesis brought listeners up-to-date on the trio version of the group and its recent hit singles from Abacab and Duke. The U.K. version of the album (Charisma GE 2002), despite the title, was an all-live album, while the American version (Atlantic SD 2-2000), had three live sides and a fourth side of studio material, including the Top 40 hit "Paperlate" (which appeared in the U.K. as part of an EP called 3 By 3). -- William Ruhlmann\n\nHalf.com Album Notes (1994 Remastered, Reconfigured Edition)\nAll tracks have been digitally remastered.\n\nGenesis's third live album finds the group at a major turning point. The group had just released ABACAB, successfully trimming its musical fat and turning the corner from post-prog to avant-pop. Overt commerciality hadn't yet set in, so the balance between art and pop was just right on this 1982 release. Naturally, the album leans heavily on ABACAB and DUKE material. From the reggae-ish lilt of "Me & Sarah Jane" to the minimalist electro-rock of "Abacab," it's a pleasure to hear the group exulting in its newfound sound, seemingly free of prog-rock trappings and able to venture into new rhythmic territory. \n\nFortunately for Genesis diehards, though, the group's prog-rock legacy doesn't fade away so easily. Even in the '80s, the in-concert Genesis was still master of the complex art-rock epic style that first brought the group acclaim. Accordingly, the band tackles some of the most structurally sophisticated tunes from its Gabriel-era back catalog, including "Watcher of the Skies" and "The Fountain of Salamacis." Thus, Genesis proves capable of embracing the new without forsaking the old.\n\nRolling Stone Review (3 Stars)\nLive albums generally are a retrospective of a band's career from the beginning, but Three Sides Live stands as testimony to what Genesis has become only very recently. Unlike Seconds Out, where the concert versions of Genesis' songs were shrouded in virtuosic bluster, this album offers incisive, sharply focused performances uncluttered by theatrics or instrumental tedium. Where once Genesis represented art-rock at its most fatuously spectacular, they now show how lean and compelling such music can be. At the center of this change is singer Phil Collins, whose husky vocals no longer merely adorn the instrumental tracks but provide them with direction and pacing. Although Collins is hardly versatile, he is remarkably adept at projecting personality into Genesis' music, which in turn keeps the instrumental excesses in check.\n\nWhile all of this might have easily been expected after the leaner sound of last year's Abacab, it's still worth noting that Genesis has applied its new perspective to older material, even shrinking such songs as "The Colony of Slippermen" and "The Cinema Show" into a single, concise medley. Too bad that the fourth side of Three Sides Live, comprising unreleased material, is flat semipop that was better left in the vaults. (RS 375) -- J.D. CONSIDINE
