Elvis Presley A Legendary Performer, Volume 2 (1976)
1992 RCA Special Products\nOriginally Released February 1976\nCD Edition Released March 30, 1992\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: The second volume in RCA's Legendary Performer series on Elvis Presley followed the pattern of the first one, mixing well-known songs about half and half with previously unreleased songs or alternate takes. Volume 1 had boasted an alternate of the Sun Records track "I Love You Because"; Volume 2 trumped that by digging up a previously unreleased Sun song, "Harbor Lights." That was the one gem here, though. The other unreleased song was a second-rate tune left out of Flaming Star, and the other unreleased performances were mostly unnecessary live versions, though the raucous outtake of "Baby What You Want Me to Do" from the 1968 comeback special was welcome, as were the interview and press conference excerpts. Still, this album was a collector's special, not an essential release (which didn't keep it from going gold). -- William Ruhlmann\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nLegendary Performer Series helped set standards, February 27, 2002 \nReviewer: ssviland from Aurora, IL United States \nWhile a half-hour recording is paltry by today's standards for anthologies[thus a 4-start rating instead of 5], this series was a standard-setter for anthologies. In the mid-seventies there were many "Greatest Hits" and "Best of..." compilations, including Elvis' Gold Records and Worldwide Gold Award collections. But, for the Elvis fan who had everything these compilations offered a handful of rarities along with alternate versions of some hits. Some songs that have since appeared an many other compilations (i.e. Harbor Lights and Baby What Do You Wnat Me To Do) appeared first hear. There are excerpts from interviews and a cross-section of Elvis' diverse stylings, including Rock-a-billy, rock-n-roll, country, rhythm & blues and gospel. At [the cost] for the CD's, its worth it for even the casual Elvis collector who may not have some of these recordings already on CD. I would like to see RCA remaster and repackage the Legendary Performer series, especially Volu,es 1-4, into a single... \n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nPersonnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals, acoustic guitar) The Jordanaires, The Imperials Quartet (background vocals).\n\nHad Elvis Presley done nothing else but record "That's Alright, Mama," his place in pop music history would be secure. With his first regional hit, Presley fused rhythm and blues with country, put a handsome white face out front for audiences to see, and in so doing legitimized beat music for white audiences. It is no understatement to call Presley the chief catalyst of the rock-and-roll era. During the 1950s, Presley's records spent a collective 53 weeks in the number one chart position. Only the Beatles can boast similar sales success.\n\nPresley's monumental accomplishments continued until his untimely death in 1977. After a stint in the Army, he spent a decade making profitable but forgettable movies. Then in 1968 he reestablished his artistic relevance with a spectacular television special and several great albums. During the last decade of his career, Presley's live show was the hottest ticket in America. A great singer first and last, Presley was equally adept at raunchy blues, lilting boogie, operatic pop, and country tear-jerkers.
