The Lovin' Spoonful Everything Playing (1968)
Originally Released 1968\nRemastered CD Edition (Buddha Records) Relesed February 18, 2003\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: The Lovin' Spoonful's fourth album, Everything Playing, \nwas made under trying circumstances. Musically, the Sgt. Pepper/Summer \nof Love era had made The Spoonful's good time, jugband approach obsolete, \nand chief songwriter John Sebastian had to try to keep up. Personally, \nthe group had suffered the disaster of a drug bust that resulted in the \ndeparture of lead guitarist Zally Yanovsky, who was replaced in August \n1967 by Jerry Yester. Despite these problems, Sebastian was able to turn \nout a good album paced by its three Top 40 hits, "Six O'Clock," "She Is \nStill a Mystery," and the deceptively comic "Money," in which he castigated \nfinancial aspects of the music industry. Also excellent were "Boredom" \nand "Younger Generation," which Sebastian later would sing at Woodstock. \nWhen Sebastian wasn't at the mike, the singing could be mediocre, and \nthe group was often all over the map in its attempt at musical sophistication, \nbut the record was saved by Sebastian's writing and singing. Then he too \njumped ship. [The 1996 Wooden Hill reissue adds five bonus tracks.] -- \nWilliam Ruhlmann\n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nIncludes two previously unreleased bonus tracks.\n\nIncludes liner notes by Dennis Dekin.\n\nAll tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes.\n\nThis 1968 album was essentially their last, as founder and leader John \nSebastian was to depart after its completion. EVERYTHING PLAYING has a \nrelaxed, almost off-the-cuff feeling to it. Original member Zal Yanovsky \nwas gone and his replacement, Jerry Yester, along with bass player Steve \nBoone and drummer Joe Butler all brought the first non-Sebastian originals \nto appear on a Lovin' Spoonful album. In Sebastian's shadow their songs \nare pleasant album cuts, clearly not sounding like chart-toppers and not \nreleased as singles. Sebastian's own "Six O'Clock" and "She Is Still A \nMystery" were his last hits with the band (and the end of their days on \nthe top forty). YEAR: 1968
