Dog & Butterfly (1978)
Originally Released September 1978 \nCD Edition Released April 1988\nRemastered CD Edition Released June 29, 2004\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: (Remastered & Expanded Edition) Released in 1978, Dog & Butterfly was Heart's fourth success in a row. Like its predecessors, Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen, it sold over a million copies and cast Ann and Nancy Wilson's superstardom in concrete. There was a price to pay for all of this success, and after Dog & Butterfly original guitarist Roger Fisher left the band. The disc reached number 14 on the Billboard album chart, matching Magazine's position. This remastered and expanded edition of the album features brilliant 24-bit sound and three bonus tracks. In many ways, Heart were beginning to make their transition, but the wonderful balance of hard, Led Zeppelin-influenced power rock and multi-textured ballads is still everywhere in evidence here. The single from the album -- "Straight On" -- continues to resonate with its sultry power and slippery, soulful rockist funk, and the title track is one of the finest examples of the Wilson sisters' otherworldly ballad style. The bonus tracks include "Heartless" from a live BBC show that same year, "Feels" (a very early and radically different version of "Johnny Moon"), and the previously unissued Nancy Wilson guitar solo "A Little Bit." Dog & Butterfly is still a magical and thought-provoking record some 26 years after the fact, and a stellar example that not all rock had deteriorated into corporate formula slickness and hollow bombast in the late '70s. ~ Thom Jurek\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: (Original CD Edition) Dog & Butterfly became Heart's fourth million-selling album and placed two songs of opposing styles in the Top 40. Like their Magazine album, Dog & Butterfly peaked at number 17 on the charts, but the material from it is much stronger from every standpoint, with Anne and Nancy Wilson involving themselves to a greater extent. The light, afternoon feel of the title track peaked at number 34, while the more resounding punch of "Straight On" went all the way to number 15 as the album's first single. With keyboard player Howard Leese making his presence felt, and the vocals and guitar work sounding fuller and more focused, the band seems to be rather comfortable once again. Average bridge-and-chorus efforts like "Cook With Fire" and "High Time" aren't spectacular, but they do emit some appeal as far as filler is concerned, while "Lighter Touch" may be the best of the uncharted material. After this album, guitarist Roger Fisher left the band, but Heart didn't let up. 1980's Bebe le Strange showed an even greater improvement, peaking at number five in April of that year. ~ Mike DeGagne\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nA Middling Heart Album, January 11, 2002\nReviewer: Brian Rubendall (Oakton, VA) - See all my reviews\n"Dog & Butterfly" was the third Heart album, following the far suprior "Dreamboat Annie" and "Little Queen." It marked the beginning of a decline that would culminate with the band losing its record contract in the early 1980s. The title track is a first rate ballad and "Straight On" is a fine radio hit, but after that there isn't much to hang your hat on. The first two tracks are live recordings of inferior quality and the remaining four are decent but unspectacular filler material. Additionally, at a total of only eight songs, this is a pretty slight effort. Casual listeners would be better off with any of Heart's Greatest Hits albums.\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\n"Dog & Butterfly": The best of the "early" Heart albums, April 15, 2001\nReviewer: Lawrance M. Bernabo (The Zenith City: Duluth, MN United States)\nThis 1978 album is clearly the best of the "early" Heart albums (a.k.a. the Roger Fisher period), before they turned into a sex and glitter arena group. The idea was that Side 1 represented the DOG, with harder rock songs like "High Time" and "Straight On," while Side 2 was the BUTTERFLY, with acoustic numbers like the title track and "Nada One." Fittingly, the album ends with "Mistral Wind," one of the group's longest songs (6:43) which starts off acoustic and ends like gangbusters. I still remember cranking up the volume on that one. One of the nice things about their acoustic work, besides Nancy Wilson's guitar playing, is you can better enjoy it when Ann and Nancy sing harmonies. For me it was never a choice between Heart's light and heavy sides, they were adept at playing both types of music. Besides, there is always the fun of trying to find the Zeppelin riffs in some of these songs.\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nthe best of both worlds, March 9, 1999\nReviewer: A music fan\nWhat does a band do when they're equally good at electric rock and acoustic? For Heart, they showcased both styles in this 5-star album. While "Stright On" and the title song were the best known, the overall best song is the finale, "Mistral Wind". Here an acoustic whisper builds into a fierce electrical scream and then comes back down with a beautiful piano and chime ending. Every time I hear this one I go into an almost hypnotic state. "Mistral Wind" is Heart's un-sung masterpiece, a hauntingly beautiful song.\n\nHalf.com Album Credits\nMike Flicker, Engineer\nRick Keefer, Engineer\n\nAlbum Notes\nProducers: Mike Flicker, Heart, Mike Fisher.\n\nHeart's third release, 1978's DOG AND BUTTERFLY, completed the trilogy of Heart's classic '70s albums begun with DREAMBOAT ANNIE and LITTLE QUEEN (not counting the spotty MAGAZINE which was not a band-approved release). Along with a host of other new rock bands (Foreigner, Boston, Cheap Trick, etc.), Heart helped fill the void for hard rock bands left by Led Zeppelin's late-'70s absence, all the while ignoring such musical trends as disco.DOG AND BUTTERFLY was another strong album for Heart, spawning such FM radio hits as "Straight On," and the acoustic title track. It would be the last album issued by the original line-up (guitarist Roger Fisher left after the album's subsequent tour).
