Namely, the British Invasion; Don and Phil beefed up their sound on this record in appreciation of the style that was exploding all around them, while displaying unerring taste in their cover selections. One of their best, first time on CD! \n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: (Rock 'N Soul) Rock n' Soul features a whole LP of oldies covers with guitar-heavy '60s arrangements, including such standards as "That'll Be the Day," "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Lonely Weekends," "I Got a Woman," and the then-recent "Dancin' in the Streets." It's decently played and sung, but not among the Everlys' most creative work, or even among their most interesting material of the mid-'60s. It's also not quite as good as the similar album they would release later in 1965, Beat & Soul. The version of "Love Hurts," incidentally, is a different, more rock-oriented version than the ballad arrangement they had recorded a few years previously. -- Richie Unterberger \n \nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: (Beat 'N Soul) For the second album in a row, the Everlys presented an entire LP of rock & roll covers (and one original), most of which had originally been hits in the 1950s -- "Love Is Strange," "Money," "Hi Heel Sneakers," "My Babe," "The Girl Can't Help It," "Lonely Avenue," and so on. While the performances are pretty good -- and the vocals perennially better than good -- it also seemed to be an indication that the pair were unwilling or unable to write or procure a decent supply of new material. Because of the overfamiliarity of most of the songs, it has to rate as one of the brothers' less interesting efforts, regardless of the high level of execution. Nevertheless, "Love Is Strange" almost made the Top Ten in the U.K., and the sole original, "Man With Money," was a quality effort that was covered by several British groups including, unexpectedly, the Who (though their version was not released until the 1990s). -- Richie Unterberger\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW (Beat 'N Soul)\nGreat rock covers by rock's golden duo, September 6, 2005\nReviewer: redtunictroll (Earth, USA)\nIn the shadow of the British Invasion, the Everlys were either finding it more difficult to write (or find) new material, they didn't try, or they thought that cover tunes were going to reconnect them with a large audience. This second album of covers from 1965 (the first being "Rock and Soul") finds the brothers harmonies as golden as ever, and with sympathetic arrangements, these are solid, even memorable performances. But as commercial output, one has to wonder whether record buyers were waxing nostalgic for the '50s and early '60s covers that fill most of the track list. \n\nIn retrospect, Everly Brothers fans should jump at the chance to hear them cover the rock, soul and R&B songs collected here. The UK was hip in '65, pushing "Love is Strange" onto the charts, but stateside, nada. Covers of Ray Charles ("Lonely Avenue"), Little Richard ("The Girl Can't Help It") and Ivory Joe Hunter ("I Almost Lost My Mind") date back to the Everly's early hit-making days. More contemporaneous, the Everlys cover the then-recently charted "People Get Ready," and mid-60s staples like "Money" and "My Babe." The sole original, "Man With Money" was originally a B-side of "Love is Strange," which perhaps explains its inclusion in an album of covers. \n\nWhile an album of covers doesn't display the full fidelity of the Everly's talents, it does provide 31 minutes of fine Everly singing on some of the greatest songs ever written.
