Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'\n1992 C-Five Records\n\nOriginally Released August 1964\nC-Five Records CD Edition Released July 29, 1994\nOne Way Records 2fer CD Edition (with ''Ride The Wild Surf''') Released June 18, 1996\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Jan & Dean's first Liberty album is overall slightly more successful than its successor and holds up very nicely -- as rock & roll, it's not in a league with, say, Elvis Presley's best music of the period, or a match for the Beach Boys' albums for musical depth, but it established the duo as the latter band's more lighthearted, fun-oriented rivals/colleagues. Beyond the title tune (which was a modest hit), Jan & Dean turn in solid, rocking versions of the latter group's "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari," have delightfully mindless fun on numbers like "Let's Turkey Trot," and show their appreciation of their East Coast rivals the Four Seasons with an exuberant version of "Walk Like a Man," while their rendition of "Rhythm of the Rain" has a low-key charm that wasn't usually associated with this duo (and comes off very well). The usual backup musicians, including Hal Blaine on drums and Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco, and Billy Strange on guitar, keep everything tight and seamless in the backup department, giving Jan & Dean ample opportunity for vocal acrobatics and comic antics on numbers like "Mr. Bass Man." The duo also turns in a respectable version of the Rooftop Singers/Gus Cannon hit "Walk Right In," with an anonymous female singer added to the vocals, which doesn't add anything special to their catalog (though it does anticipate the Folk 'n Roll album by three years), but balancing that is a delightful cover of Lou Christie's "The Gypsy Cried" and a good try at turning the Victor Young pop standard "My Foolish Heart" into a "Blue Moon"-type doo wop hit. "Take Linda Surfin" for those who have never heard it, is a very interesting album. There are many styles of music within it. A little bit of surf music, folk music, doo-wop, and other cool stuff, all together on one great album. Of course, the classic hit "Linda" is included, which I think is an awesome record! "Ride the Wild Surf" is also a great album! In this album, Jan & Dean give us what they are known best for... The Surf Sound. All the songs are surf songs. "Ride the Wild Surf" and "Sidewalk Surfin" are the big hits from the album, but all the songs are great surf recordings!\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW (One Way Records 2fer Edition)\nReissue of Two LP's, November 13, 1999 \nReviewer: A music fan\n\nAs the picture above shows, this CD is a reissue of two Jan & Dean LP's from the mid sixties. It's nice to have J & D's songs reissued as complete albums rather than the usual "best of" stuff. \n\nThe CD label is "One Way Records". I've never heard of them. The address is New York, so it does not appear to be an import. \n\nThe sound quality is as good as any Jan & Dean reissue I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot of them. Almost all songs are in flawless true stereo. Only track 18 is in simulated stereo, but also appeared that way on the original LP. Oh yea, the bonus track is also in simulated stereo, but hey, that wasn't part of the original LP's anyway. Also, the stereo is in the original "Visual Sound Stereo" as originally heard on the Liberty LP's. "Visual Sound Stereo" typically meant the main vocal was heard on one channel only instead of the middle as is typical today. Jan & Dean LP's were well known for this type of stereo mixing. And a thank you to One Way Records for not trying to remix the stereo. This is how they sounded on the original LP's and that's the way it should be kept, end of debate. \n\nHalf.com N/A
