Blondie Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision (2006)
Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision\n\nOriginally Released March 7, 2006\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision distinguishes itself from the other Blondie compilations (of which there are several) by adding a DVD that contains 16 (all?) of the group's videos. A couple inconsequential remixes appear where original versions or other career highlights should be present, but otherwise, the audio disc does a fair job, even though it's basically retracing the steps of the compilations that came before it. Most of the essential material is here ("Heart of Glass," "Rapture," "Hanging on the Telephone," "One Way or Another," "Dreaming," "Atomic"), but it's inexplicable that neither "X Offender" nor "(I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear" made they cut, especially when they are on the edition of this release that came out in Germany. Some of the most devout fans will be irritated by the idea of buying the hits all over again in order to get the DVD, and the studio albums were reissued in 2001 with excellent remastered sound, so they really won't have any desire for all the overlapping content. Despite these issues, this set remains one of the best (and best looking) Blondie compilations, even without considering the videos. "Rapture Riders," a very silly and perverse mash-up of "Rapture" with the Doors' "Riders on the Storm," is included as a bonus track. -- Andy Kellman\n\nAmazon.com Product Description\nBlondie defies definition. The legendary band is a little bit punk, a little bit reggae, a little bit rock, a little bit new wave, a little bit pop, a little bit hip-hop and a lot of downtown attitude. Already gold in Europe, Blondie: Greatest Hits--Sound & Vision was released March 7 by Capitol/EMI, one week before the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. The new CD/DVD package contains 20 audio tracks and 16 video clips, including the band's biggest hits and previously unreleased remixes. "Rapture Riders"--a mash-up of the band's "Rapture" with the Doors' "Riders on the Storm"--and its accompanying UK music video make their release debut on the new collection.\n\nBlondie's influence on today's artists is undeniable. Debbie Harry and Blondie have been a major influence on superstars like Madonna, Garbage's Shirley Manson, and R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, among many others. They were one of the first groups to emerge from New York's new wave/punk renaissance with an album (1976's Blondie); the first to chart a #1 single, a revolutionaryblend of punk and disco ("Heart of Glass"); and the first to top the charts with both a rap song (1981's "Rapture") and a reggae tune ("The Tide Is High"). And now Blondie have added to their legacy by being selected for induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Sex Pistols, and Miles Davis, as one of two first-time nominees (Davis is the other).\n\n"This is a tremendous honor for us," said the band's lead vocalist Deborah Harry, who is celebrating Blondie's 30th anniversary this year. "We're proud to take our place alongside some of our own idols."\n\nCD/DVD with 20 audio tracks and 16 videos, including Blondie classics: "Heart of Glass," "Atomic," "Call Me," "Rapture," "Maria"; previously unreleased remixes of "In the Flesh" and "Good Boys"; and special bonus audio and video tracks: "Rapture Riders"--Blondie vs. the Doors (debut release of the new mash-up of the band's 1980 hit "Rapture" and the Doors' "Riders on the Storm").\n\nDVD includes 13 music videos spanning 1977 to 1982, including groundbreaking conceptual clips for "Denis" and "The Tide Is High," as well as their most recent productions for "Maria" and "Good Boys," plus the new music video for the "Rapture Riders" mash-up. \n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nBlondie Ambition, April 21, 2006\nReviewer: Steven Housman "SHARK" (West Hollywood, CA & Miami, FL)\nIf you're already asking yourself, 'Do I really need another Blondie compilation?' then I must tell you that the answer is most definitely "Yes!" This is the most comprehensive collection the band has delivered in their thirty-year history. No, it's not a box set of rarities, it's a two-disc set with one disc of "sound" that contains their greatest hits of the past three decades and one DVD disc of "vision" that provides solid proof of why this amazing New York-based band, fronted by Debbie Harry, was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Of course, the obvious hits are here, beginning with the song that put them on the worldwide map - the #1 smash "Heart Of Glass." Other #1 smash records that follow are the Deborah Harry/Giorgio Moroder penned "Call Me," the reggae-tinged "The Tide Is High" and "Rapture," which made them the first new wave turned mainstream band to have a #1 rap song, not to mention by a female lead. The widely exposed "One Way Or Another" is here along with the 1979 classic "Dreaming" and the 1999 rocker "Maria." In between those obvious inclusions are tracks that have become Blondie staples ranging from their 1976 debut single "Rip Her To Shreds," through 2003's "Good Boys" with a new mix added in 2005. Other masterpieces include "Atomic," which topped the charts in the UK in 1979, "Sunday Girl," a new remix of "In The Flesh," "Denis," "Picture This," "Fade Away And Radiate," "Hanging On The Telephone," "Union City Blue," "Island Of Lost Souls" "End To End" and a new single that's burning up the clubs as I write this, "Rapture Riders," billed as Blondie VS. The Doors, with the classic 1981 track mixed with the phenomenal Doors' 1971 epic "Riders On The Storm." Everything old is brand new again and sounding fresher than ever. The DVD of their performance videos include most of what's on the CD with the inclusion of "Detroit 442," and a personal favorite "The Hardest Part." The Bonus DVD track is a UK version of the Blondie VS. The Doors' "Rapture Riders." It's inevitable that Blondie will one day deliver a box set of hits and rarities in one package, but until they do, pick up this "Sound & Vision" set, and hear and see why Blondie was, and is, one of the most important rock and roll bands of all-time. \n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nClassic Cuts And New Sounds., April 3, 2006\nReviewer: Mr. Fellini "Fellini" (El Paso, Texas United States)\nJust in time for their induction into the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame comes this new Blondie collection that showcases some of the band's most popular, influential songs, material from their recent releases and a mash-up with one of the bands that influenced them. "Sound & Vision," like most Best Of sets is both a good introduction to the band's music and a well-assembled collection for the casual listener who likes Blondie, but enough to purchase every album. There is no doubt that Debbie Harry and the gang not only produced good music, but were one of the main reasons why we have real chick rockers like Shirley Manson, Gwen Stefani and yes, Madonna. Befire Princess Diana ever graced magazine covers, Harry was the most photographed woman in the world but a real Punk at heart, posing at times with such figures as Joey Ramone and Iggy Pop (eventhough at one point Patti Smith told her to "get the f--k out of rock n' roll"). "Sound And Vision" nicely shows what all the fuss was about in the late 70's through mid-80's. A lot of the songs have survived the test of time with a real sense of fun and energy like "Call Me" with it's roaring chorus and electro sheen while "Heart Of Glass" is still a classic jam, disco has died and yet this song remains. "Rapture" is still a long, dreamy anthem that brought hip-hop to a wider audience before Aerosmith and Run DMC ever broke the barrier of rock and rap. Newer material is also present here, "Maria" was a single off the band's 1999 album "No Exit," but it still has that classic Blondie sound. However I do believe listeners are cheated here when it comes to the song "Good Boys" off their latest release, "The Curse Of Blondie." The original version is a great song, but the remix here makes the song kind of cold and hollow, the same for the "In The Flesh" remix which rips the song apart, turning it into cold, techno sludge. Luckily there is one worthy remix present, "Rapture Riders," which brilliantly meshes "Rapture" with The Doors' "Riders On The Storm." Both songs flow perfectly together and it's a fitting combination since Blondie have always named The Doors as a prime influence and favorite band. Too bad Jim Morrison died in 1972, you get the feeling he and Harry would have done a marvelous duet. The extra DVD that comes with the set is a must for Blondie fans, many of the band's videos are included for classics like "Heart Of Glass," "The Tide Is High" and even the recent videos for "Maria" and "Good Boys." "Sight In Sound" a fun ride through the Blondie catalogue and a must for collectors of classic rock anthologies, and a neat teaching tool for those who wanna know why girls like Gwen, Shirley and even Britney have been scandalous and glamorous and know how to pull it off and who they learned it from.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nToo Short, but sounds good., March 14, 2006\nReviewer: B. Finney "dexbet" (Colchester, Vermont United States)\nMost of the songs are the shortened/edited single versions. Not the album versions. Too bad. However, within the CD/DVD packaging, there is advertising for all the albums (even Hunter) stating there are bonus tracs. I guess this CD is a come-on to buy all the original albums. Almost no liner notes--no who's who or timeline history or anything. Again, too bad. Sounds good.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nFlawed, March 12, 2006\nReviewer: mat davenport\nMysteriously the record company decided to omit "X-offender" and "Presence Dear", 2 Blondie classics. Buy the import instead, both songs are included.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nDeleted Songs, March 8, 2006\nReviewer: C. W. Schultheis (Las Vegas)\nThey deleted the two songs for the U.S. release, X-offender and Preasence Dear, due to the fact that they were primarily U.K. hits and singles. X-offender was only relased in the U.S. as a promo single to their 1st album. Preasence Dear was also a U.K. single as well as a top ten hit there. \n\nThose videos were probably never shown to U.S. audiences. SO they delete them to compliment the the video package. \n\nI do however like the fact they added Fade Away and Radiate to the greatest hits compilation. It was always one of thier better songs.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nUS release of Greatest Hits and DVD-- edited a bit!!, March 7, 2006\nReviewer: K. Eisenberger "dance music freak!" (Defiance, Ohio United States)\nI will always give anything Debbie Harry and Blondie does the highest rating even when the label decides to subtract tracks and DVDs off of the collections. I got the German version of the Sound & Vision :Greatest Hits collection for Christmas from my friend Roland in Holland and I actually bought a region free dvd player from my brother who works at Best Buy for Christmas so I could watch the DVD ahead of the US release. But now as Blondie becomes the first Chrysalis and who knows how long Capitol act to go into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame comes this collection. The original cd from Europe had 22 tracks and ran 79 minutes and the dvd had 17 Videos and ran around 57 minutes. The US version from Capitol removes for what unknown reason the SONGS and VIDEOS to "X Offender" and the classic "I'm Always Touched By Your Presence Dear" from the package. I am upset about this because when Capitol issued the Kylie Minogue Ultimate Kylie cd/dvd collection or the Best Shots release from Pat Benatar -- nothing was taken off either cd or DVD. So why Blondie when it was issued as a release to go with their induction of them into the Hall Of Fame. This makes me angry that these 2 songs and videos were removed. If you have the chance to buy the European dvd version you would see the beginning of "X Offender" with Debbie talking at the beginning of the video and for "Presence Dear" video instead of the car scene from The Best Of Blondie collection you get the shot of the Double Clems that begin the video. I do not see why they were removed. \n\nNow onto the actual US collection. This Greatest Hits is different than the 2002 Hits collection. This one uses only single mixes for the cd-- for the hits and longer tracks. NO full lp mixes for "Atomic" or "The Tide Is High". They-- like the European version put the UK and US number one tracks out front at tracks 1-7 and in order as well. "Heart Of Glass " from 1979 to "Maria" in 1999. All 7 number one tracks. Plus you also get the classics like "Dreaming" "One Way Or Another" and "Island Of Lost Souls" that were US top 40 singles. Plus for the first time on a US cd the FULL promo only before now 12" (6:06) Blow Up Mix that Sanctuary issued for "Good Boys". This is the rarest track here because it was a Promo only to Dj's mix that is now on the cd. PLUS you get a brand new version of the classic first huge hit from 1976 "In The Flesh" done electro style by Super Buddha that has worked with Scissor Sisters. PLUS the reason this cd did well in the UK-- the mash up for "Rapture Riders" that is out on UK vinyl 12". Done by Mark Vidler it uses the music and beat from the original 1981 "Rapture" while mostly using the vocals to The Doors trippy "Riders On The Storm". Listen to Jim Morrison sound so incredible and at ease under the dance beat and then listen for the FULL rap of Debbie's from "Rapture". The original single mix found on the European version of this cd is only 3:46 while on the US version it is 4:04. A tiny bit longer but still not as long as the FULL VERSION (which is 5:43) on 12" and promo cd single. \n\nThe Videos-- well from 1976 to 1982 Blondie issued 23 videos from each of their albums. So this is just a primer to when Capitol or EMI finally issue the full release of the 12 tracks of videos from Eat To The Beat. But the plus side (even though they deleated 2 of the best know Blondie videos) is that you get them without the stupid skits from The Best Of Blondie collection. Full and complete videos (although I still think that "Rapture " is from The Best Of Blondie with the beginning) BUT you do get the video that was not on the European issued DVD for "Rapture Riders" so that is a plus. Plus the "The Tide Is High" video is the US VH1 Classic version and not the original 1981 version. \n\nSo if you haven't bought the European version of this collection then it is fine to buy the US version because you will get the chance to see the videos completely but remember that Capitol cut 2 of the best videos and songs from this collection and I still have no clue as to why. A++++ again for just the fact that it is Debbie Harry and Blondie and the fact they are finally going into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame - a thing that should have happened four years ago. BUY it still.\n\nHalf.com Details \nProducer: Craig Leon, Go Home Productions, Mike Chapman \n\nAlbum Notes\nBlondie: Deborah Harry.\nRecording information: 1976 - 2005.\n\nMost devoted Blondie fans will already have the majority of the songs included on the first disc of this double-disc set. Alongside the band's biggest hits--"Heart of Glass," "Tide is High," "Call Me," and "Rapture"--GREATEST HITS also includes favorites like "One Way or Another" and "Sunday Girl" and lesser-known gems like "Picture This" and "Union City Blue."\nBut the real benefit of this package comes with disc number two, which features 15 videos of the band in its prime. For fans who never got to see Blondie back in the day, the "vision" portion of this SOUND & VISION set is invaluable, lending a filmic dimension to the band's glamorous blend of punk, new wave, disco, and irresistible pop. YEAR: 2006
