The combined project of George Evelyn and \n Kevin Harper, Nightmares on Wax were one of \n the brightest spots on the post-rave British \n techno map of early '90s. Although since pared \n back to just Evelyn and a handful of \n contributors, N.O.W.'s debut album, A Word of \n Science, was, along with early tracks by LFO, \n Tuff Little Unit, and Tricky Disco, a crucial \n bridge between the competing influences of New \n York house and electro, Detroit techno and \n soul, London rave and acid, and the burgeoning \n eclecticism of the years to come. Forming in \n the late '80s in West Yorkshire as an \n extension of Evelyn and Co.'s b-boy crew the \n Soul City Rockers, N.O.W.'s first singles, \n "Dextrous" and "Aftermath", were both highly \n regarded, and the latter shot into the pop \n singles Top 40. The subsequent album laid a \n good deal of the groundwork for the downtempo \n experimental hip-hop electro-funk worked over \n by Mike Paradinas, Luke Vibert, Spacer, and \n others, and earned the group a secure spot \n among techno's select crew of next-step \n innovators.
