The first in a series of gospel benefit compilations, Keeping It Real features such spiritual music all-stars as Kim Burrell, Fred Hammond (with Radical For Christ), Angie and Debbie Winans, and something called, perhaps rather ominously, Spiritual Pieces. It's a finely done -- if somewhat repetitive -- outing that nicely melds R&B and hip-hop with light (as opposed to sweeping, full-choired) gospel. As a whole, gospel tends to be more rapturous than technically masterful or expertly written, and the boisterous, sometimes clumsy Keeping It Real isn't the exception. Except for occasional moments of almost straight hip-hop, most of Real is punchy andpretty, with all of the zeal one might expect, and little of the power that marked, say, Kirk Franklin's more masterful Nu Nation Project.
