That \nlikable tune was first released on 1979's Tou chdown, and it was recorded \nagain for this 1983 release, which focuses mai nly on background music \nhe wrote for the popular television comedy. Dull b ackground music had \nbeen James' forte since the mid-1970s, and in that sen se, The Genie isn't \nout of the ordinary for him. "Angela" is the only tune on the CD that's \nmemorable; one could listen to The Genie several times a nd still have \na hard time remembering any of the melodies except "Angela." The Genie \nenjoyed airplay on some stations that claimed to be jazz-orient ed, but \ntruth be told, selections like "Night Moods" and "Groove for Julie " are \nreally instrumental pop with slight jazz overtones. Of course, wheth er \nThe Genie should be called jazz or pop isn't the thing that matters the \n most.
