Sponge Boy was only performed three times. Right away, that tells you alot about this song! Sometime in 1987 or 1988, Uncle Bonsai returned home to Seattle to play three nights at The Backstage in Ballard. It was atthese shows that we decided to teach the audience "Sponge Boy." This particular recording was made on the third, and final, night of the homestand, and the group knew that this song would probably never be performed again. You see, as much as I hate to admit it, Sponge Boy is not a very good song. It is, however, an important song!\n\nI am extremely proud ofthe years I spent in Uncle Bonsai. Singing with Arni Adler and Ashley O'Keefe was an honor; they inspired me to write an enormous number of songs and sang them all, even the "lesser" ones, with style and impeccable intonation.\n\nThe group sang serious songs, patter songs, folk songs, jazzsongs, dance songs, Doug songs, classical songs, reggae songs, calypso songs, dark songs, funny songs, dry songs, desperate songs, sad songs, andstupid songs...all with conviction and, quite often, a much-needed senseof humor.
