Immortaly Lessons (1984)
Jordanis Tsomidis was born in 1933 in Kokkinia, were his family had settled as refugees from Samsun, Turky. He had no formal education, but was taught to read and write by a local teachr. Eight years old when the war broke out he recalls the german occupation and the hardships which follwed: "I used to ride with my scooter every day from Kokkinia to Saint George and dive into the sea to Forget my hunger "In those day`s the sea at Piraeus was cristal clear. At twelve he learned to play the violin and bousouki. By the time he was thirteen he was giving lessons to the other boys with a boorrowed bousouki.Eventually he was performing in small neighbourhood theatres. As a teenager he won the tittle of Pan-Hellenic Youth Champion in the 5000meter run. Shortly after this he decidedto embark on a professional music career,performing in such city`s as Vols, Argrinion, Prevesa, Arta Salonica, and later in his native Kokkinia where he was welcomed at the clup :Perivola" . While in Athens he played and became a close friend of the reknowed Prodromos Tsaousakis. After serving in the armyuntil 1957, he performed briefly in Nea Philadelphia, and ultimately found work in America, as did many other bousoukiplayers of the time. \nHe remained in the U.S. fot fifteen years, traveling from New York to Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Las Vegas end Reno, appearing in numerous Greek clups such as the Greek Village and theTorch Room in Hollywood. with the money he had saved he opened a clup upon his return to Greece. Jordanis found he was more a musician than a business man and decided to go abroad again. He has since made several recordings in the U.S.and Germany, including a jazz album with Phil Woods on saxofone entittled "Greek Cooking"on Impulse AS-9143.
