Carmen Miranda South American Way
Stick an outsize banana on your head ans you are bound to be noticed. \nStick the same banana on your head garnish with other fruits, sing, dance \nand ooze personality, then you willnot be noticed but remembered. \nAnd so it was with Carmen Miranda, dubbed " The Brazilian Bombshell ".\nShe was born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha on 9th Feb., 1909, near\nLisabon, Portugal, but the familiy moved to Brazil when she was still a child. \nIn her teens, and her name was adapted to Carmen Miranda, she sang on the\nnew medium of the radio. Recording followd in the early 1930s, and her\nBrazilian film debut in 1934.\nAnother three films later, her vivacious perfomances and master of \nLatin-American rythms cataputled Carmen to NY in 1939 to appear in the\nBroadway revue " The Streets Of Paris " alongside Abbot & Costello.\nSporting six-inch heels and her outrageous "bowl of fruits" headgear, the song\n"South American Way" became the hit of the show and Carmen an instant star.\nHollywood beckoned, and she was given a showcase role in \n"Down Argentine Way" singing dancing "Mama eu quero". A top show-business\npersonality career streched before her, combining films, records, radio and stage\napperearances, including a season at the London Palladium in 1948.\nIn that year Carmen also notched up an American chart hit "Cuanto la Gusta",\nand two years later another, "The Wedding Samba", both aided and abetted\nby The Andrews Sisters. Her final film appearance came in Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis\ncomedy "Scard Stiff" in 1953.\nBusy to the end, Carmen's untimely death in 1955 from a heart attack occured whilst\nrehearising a television spot with Jimmy Durante. Alway larger than life, if death \naged 44 was a tragedy, then the legacy left behind conferred on C.M. an immortality\ngranted tofew. Mimicked and spoofed by many even today, the sparkling film and\nrecorded performances of Carmen still outshine the imitators and confirm\nher place int the firmament.
