George Jones In A Gospel Way (1974)
Originally Released 1974\nRazor & Tie CD Edition Released May 20, 1997\nS&P Records CD Edition Released October 11, 2005\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: N/A\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThe Gospel according to Jones, March 27, 2005\nReviewer: Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America)\nThis is a reissue of an album from 1973, when the great George Jones (country's greatest singer ever, period.) was working with producer Billy Sherrill. It's one of many gospel albums Jones recorded in his career, and one of the best.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGeorge "Graces" the Gospel Genre, October 23, 2001\nReviewer: C-Beck (Portland, OR United States)\nAn incredible feat for Jones worshippers around the universe. "In a Gospel Way" delivers the listener to every corner of the Possum's impossible vocal range. If you like to see him raise hell, wait until you hear him open the gates of heaven. From his unsurpassed "Amazing Grace", to the awe-inspiring "Mama's Hands", George's soulful renditions will bring you to your knees. I'm not a religious man, but this record made me feel like I had been saved.\n\nHalf.com Details \nContributing artists: The Jordanaires \n\nAlbum Notes\nPersonnel includes: George Jones (vocals); The Jordanaires, The Nashville Edition (background vocals).\n\nProducer: Billy Sherrill.\nReissue producer: Mike Ragogna.\n\nOriginally released on Epic (32562).\n\nAlthough George Jones was well into a career marked by a reputation for drinking like a fish and being quite the rabble-rouser, the release of IN A GOSPEL WAY showed another side of the hard-living country singer. Having grown up with a mother who played piano in church, GOSPEL WAY was not such a far-fetched idea for Jones. He recorded eleven Gospel songs ranging from lushly orchestrated traditional fare ("Amazing Grace") to the rollicking "Mama Was A Preacher Man," co-written by the dulcet-toned Texan himself.\nThe redemptive touch of God is reflected in the tale of a ne'er-do-well who sees the light in "The Baptism Of Jesse Taylor," and the search for absolution in Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me, Lord?" seems a thinly disguised plea for salvation from the rough-and-tumble Jones. Although producer Billy Sherrill's use of billowy string arrangements, crying steel guitar and the Jordanaires and Nashville Edition as background vocalists makes GOSPEL WAY a neat, countrypolitan package, Possum's pain radiates clearly in songs such as "Mama's Hands" and "Release Me (From My Sin)."\n\nIndustry Reviews\n4 stars (out of 5) - ...marvelous vocals....[Jones is] a true 'singer's singer' and colossus of country music...\nDown Beat (09/01/1997)
