Rick Nelson Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band 1969 - 1976 (1995)
Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band 1969 - 1976\n1995 Edsel Records/Demon Records\n\nOriginally Released April 25, 1995\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: N/A\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nUnheralded but superb!, March 16, 2002\nReviewer: A music fan\nFaced with the prospect of being an "oldies act" for the rest of his career, Rick Nelson did a radical shift away from good ol' rock 'n roll in the late Sixties/early Seventies and released several albums that typify the best of what's now known as "country rock." This collection and a subsequent "Volume 2" feature the cream of those albums, and they showcase a guy with great interpretive abilities (he arguably does the most definitive versions of Bob Dylan's songs this side of the Byrds), really good songs of his own and a crack ensemble backing him to the hilt. The Stone Canyon Band featured some the finest musicians in the business (the great Tom Brumley on pedal steel, past-Poco-and-future-Eagle Randy Meisner on bass, Allan Kemp doing lead guitar) and they and the others who came into the group at various points give Nelson's pleasant tenor a big push forward. Nelson holds his own at all times, whether he rocks out with "If You Gotta Go, Go Now," downshifts to gentle with "Lifestream" and "Anytime" or waxes sardonic with--what else--"Garden Party," still one of the best commentaries on the dangers of nostalgia. This showcases a fine artist who died all too soon, but he at least never ended up having to "drive a truck," as he puts it in "Garden Party."\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nA grown-up Nelson in his Prime!, May 20, 1999\nReviewer: A music fan\nFormer teen idol Rick Nelson was making some of the best music of his career in the early 70's, hard-driving country-rock that stands comfortably next to Michael Nesmith's in sound & quality. Only nobody was buying! Too bad... Excellent covers of Dylan's "Just Like A Woman" and the Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" round out a great collection of Nelson originals. "This Train" is one of my favorite "new" rock tunes, and perhaps the only song I've ever felt was just TOO SHORT! The album's finale is the incredible, powerful and eerily prophetic "Gypsy Pilot", on which Rick sings about life on the road. It ends with the sound of a plane crash. Isn't that just spooky?\nThis album is now also available as a "twofer" with the earlier "RICK SINGS NELSON", which is almost as good, and for real fans may be a better deal.\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nExcellent introduction to the founder of LA Country Rock., November 27, 1998\nReviewer: A music fan\nHere at last is a excellent introduction to the founder of LA Country Rock music. Combining his Top 40 hits "She belongs To Me" & "Garden Party" with to most, his unheard album cuts. Now at last such great songs as "Gypsy Pilot", "One Night Stand" and some great Dylan tunes, can be heard in one listening. Miss at your own peril.\n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nFull performer name: Rick Nelson & Stone Canyon Band.\n\nRick Nelson & Stone Canyon Band: Rick Nelson (vocals, guitar, piano); Allen Kemp (guitar, background vocals); Tom Brumley (pedal steel guitar); Randy Meisner, Tim Cetera (bass, background vocals); Pat Shanahan (drums).\n\nIncludes liner notes by John Tobler.
