Various Sacred Classics - Disk 1 (1996)
The power of music to inspire and reflect religious feeling has been recognised from pre-Christian times: it has played a vital part in church worship, and continues to do so to this day. Moreover, the church has beenan important employer of composers, who have in turn rewarded their patrons with some of the most beautiful and moving works in the entire classical repertoire. The earliest work here is the sublime Miserere mei, Deusby Gregorio Allegri - a work so treasured by the clerics of the Sistine Chapel that it was forbidden to be performed anywhere else. From the Baroque era we hear music by Vivaldi, Bach, and Handel, whose large-scale oratorios and passions remain favourites to this day. The tradition of writing musical settings of the Mass for the Dead is represented here by excerpts from the Requiems of Mozard, Verdi, and Faure, which span the gamutof emotions from terror to gentle contemplation\n\ncopyright Edward Karshaw, 1996
