Arthur Rubinstein Chopin - Ballades and Scherzos (1959)
The Chopin Ballades and Scherzos (Hybrid SACD)\nArthur Rubinstein\nRCA Living Stereo LP Originally Released 1959\nCD Edition Released ????\nHybrid SACD Released September 14, 2004\n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nBest performances in very good sound, October 21, 2004 \nReviewer: F. Neri (Los Alamos, NM USA)\nThese 1959 recordings are Arthur Rubinstein's last of these works by Fredric Chopin. Without doubt they are the best performances on record of these works. But now, in this magnificent reissue, they are also the most realistic sounding. \n\nModern recordings are not better then the old ones: the recording art in 1959 was vastly superior to what is left of it today: the people that produced these old recordings were creative engineers at the forefront of a new field (stereo recording). The tape machines they used have no rivals in sound quality: the move to more and more tracks was a choice of quantity over quality. Same for the microphones: the move to more channels mandated a choice of cheaper, fouler sounding mikes. \n\nThis hybrid CD-SACD has two layers: one is recognized by old-style CD players, the other has both two and three channel SACD tracks. The SACD tracks have the best sound quality, but you need a new SACD-compatible player to read them. Many new DVD players have the capability of playing SACD records: as an example, the SONY DVP-NC685V DVD changer has SACD capability. \n\nThere is nothing to criticize about this recording: great performances, very good price ($11 from Amazon), incredible sound quality, and you get two LPs in a single CD. \n\nThe multi-track SACD gives you basically the content of the original 1/2" master tapes: these were three-track recordings, and you get all three tracks. The old LP and CD releases were based on a two-track downmix (on 1/4" tape) of the three-track master. The sound quality is the best you can get, short of stealing the original master tapes (and the very expensive machines needed to play them). \n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nThese performances were recorded at Manhattan Center, NYC, March 25 and 26 1959 (Scherzos) and April 28 and 29, 1959 (Ballades) YEAR: 1959
This classical cd contains 8 tracks and runs 71min 26sec.
