George Pehlivanian won internationl acclaim in 1991, at the age of twenty-seven, wwhen he became the first \nAmerican to win - by unanimous desision - the Grand Prize of Europe's most coveted conducting competition in Besancon, France. Ater\neight days of intence competition, he is said to both have "won the loyalty of the orchestra and... captivated the international jury." (Le \nMonde) hailed "His undenable presence and authority... (he was) simple heroic!," whilst (Le Figaro) considered that "The Moscow Radio \nOrchestra, clearly made its choice of a 'hero'... of natual distinction, elegance and professionalism." His success had resulted in invitations to \nconduct major orvhestras and opera companies through out Europe, Japan, and the former Soviet Union.\n\n Mr. Pehlivanian's guest conduction engagements include Moscow and Budapest Radio Symphonies, Orchestre de la Suisse\nRomanade, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburh, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Northen Sinfonia of England, Ensemble Orchesral de Paris, \nOrchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Tokyo Toho Gakuen Orchestra, Orquestra Metropolitain de Lisboa, Staats Philharmonie \nRheinland-Pfalz, Orchestr du Capitole de Toulouse, Grazer Philharmonisches Orchester, Anhalische Philharmonie Dessau, Orchestre\nPhilharmonique des Pays de la Loire, Philharmonica Di Russe, Orcheste Regional de Picardie, Armenian Philharmonic, and operas at \nthe Nancy and Besncon Opera Houses in France.\n\n Mr. Pehlicanian was born in Beyrouth, Lebanon wheere he began his mucsical studies. A child prodigy, he began playing the \npiano at the age of three and the violin at six. By nine he had owon the First Prize of the Lebanese National Concerto Copetition on \nthe Violin. Thwo years later, in 1975, he and his family emigrated to the United States to libve in Long Beach, California ewhere he began \nhis career aas a violinist. In 1987 he made his Varnegie Hall debut, when the New Your Times noted that he "provied his virtuoso \ncredentials... with a lean concentrated tone, and ciltivated musicanship."\n\n Having studied with Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, and Ferdinand Leiner, he made his conductiong debut at the age of 19 in \nLos Angeles whilst still pursuing his career as a violinist. He has spent two summers in Diena, Italy confucting at the Academia \nChigiana where he was awarded the "Diploma di Merito." He was also a winner in the American Symphony Orchestra League \ncompetitions in Pittsburgh and Los Angleses. He became the Principal Guest Conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic in October, \n1992 and the Honorary Conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic in March 1993.\n\n Pehlivanian had earened the admiration of his mentor Pierre Boulez, "I earnestly recommend him to the attention of any person in \nsearch of a youg and promising conductor."\n
