Beethoven Symphony 5 & 6 "Pastoral" (2005 Hybrid SACD) (1956)
Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6 "Pastoral" (Hybrid SACD)\nBostonSymphEXTD=ing Stereo LP Originally Released 1956\nCD Edition Released March 9, 1993\nHybrid SACD Released July 26, 2005\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: The liner notes for this reissue of Beethoven's Fifth and Sixth symphonies include an essay on the Fifth that opens "There is in the world music of more sophistication, but none thatmore surely, more powerfully makes itself understood"; an essayon the Sixth that opens "In the heart of every music-lover, thereis a cherished place for the 'Pastoral' Symphony"; an essay entitled "The History of Living Stereo" that describes the superiority of the recording process; and an essay entitled "Technical Notes" that describes the excellence of the remastering process. \n\nWhile a certain amount of balderdash and ballyhoo are always necessary in program notes, it is remarkable that nothing more is mentioned of the conductor than his name. After all, there have beenhundreds of recordings of the Fifth and Sixth over the years, and the thing that truly distinguishes this one from the competition is the conductor on theEXTD=s at home in both French and Germanorchestral repertoires, and while his recordings of Debussy andRavel are rightly regarded as classics, his recordings of Beethoven and Brahms are nearly in the same league. As these 1955 recordings with the Boston Symphony demonstrate, his Fifth was muscularand direct, while his Sixth was relaxed and comfortable. EXTD=rgy and excitement of the performance are completely convincing. And wEXTD=and blessedness of the performance are extremely compelling. While the sound of the Living Stereo original and the currentremastering is very impressive in its way, the real reason to hear this disc is to hear EXTD=ally impressed, September 5, 2005 \nReviewer: J. K. Snyder "music critique" (Cleveland, OH USA) \nI figured it out. Charles Munch was only a master at interpreting French music, not so much of German. Daphnis aEXTD= beautiful. Beethovan's 5th and Pastoral symphonies were just great, not remarkable, but not bad at all. \nI have the scores to these works, and for the fast movements, he slows them down about 5 metronomic notches. For the slower movements, he decides to go a little faster (which is a life saver for the second mvt. of the 6th). The metronome markings are not what really irritated me, it was the strangeinstrumentation. There sounds like there are 6 horns in the orchestra, not two, and in the middle of the 1st mvt in the 5th, thebassoons are supposed to get the fanfare that was at first used in the horns, instead it sounds like both the horns and the bassoons play it. Then in the finale, 27 measures before the Presto section, there are supposed to be two bassoons playing the final theme, not two bassoons and the contrabassoon. I'm thankful to havefound my two of my favorite Beethovan symphonies for a great price, but I thought the quality could have been better. \n\n
