If you're talking in terms on not being invaded or occupied England (1066 AD) and Thailand have to be some of the oldest. India was a British colony so that doesn't count. Most parts of France have being owned by England/Spain/Austria at some point as well as being occupied in two world wars. Denamsrk was also occupied in WWII

well as far as i can see your all wrong Denmark is the oldest nation in the world the danish flag dates back to around 1219 a.d. and the first british king was in fact a dane not to mention that the reason they call it normandy is because of the viking occupation there normandy means northmen scotland france england ireland and many more countries where occupiede by the danes of course back then Denmark was a big nation consisting of sweden and norway and a big part of germany and poland there have even been found evidence that the vikings where the first to set foot in northamerica but if you talk in terms of country wise and not nations greece and egypt are perhaps some of the oldest

One of the oldest countries and maybe the oldest is Bulgaria. The first Bulgarian state in Europe is found 165 AD.Bulgars as nation are known since 5th centuty BC.Later in 631 AD is found the Old Great Bulgaria(also called Bulgaria of Kubrat) in the area between the Black sea and the Caspian sea.In present borders the state of Bulgaria was established in 681 AD.In that year khan Asparuh, son of Kubrat and leader of a branch of the nomadic Bulgars who were imigrating in their search of new land and living, crossed the Danube river and managed to unite the local Slavic tribes and ancient Thracian people into a common state.Medieval Bulgaria was one of most powerful states in Europe. In fact in the 8th sentury there were only 3 important states in Europe:the Frankish empire, the Byzantine empire and the Bulgarian khanate. Bulgaria is the only contry in Europe which hasn't changed its name for almost 20 centuries.

the issue about iran being the oldest country is bs. iran was founded just after the first world war by the colonial power of great britain before world war 1 it was known as persia divided numerous of time by other nations of war one of them being arabians and also the britains so iran is not the oldest country in the world neither is bulgary since its been divide by the roman empire and was in the state of turmoil right after the fall of the roman empire the oldest nation and country is denmark and it has existed since around 430a.d. the official flag of denmark also the oldest in the world came to around 1174 the monarchy of denmark has existed since before year 800 a.d. making Denmark not only the oldest nation but also the oldest monarchy in the world this is historic fact and not speculations look instead of just guessing your own country to be the oldest the first official king of england was a danish viking lord called kanute the great read the books people its out there.

Though India became as a country only after britishers rule it was split up into many kingdoms before their regime. it was not a country till then but still their kingdoms worshipped Sun and their religion was the oldest. even today the hindus worship the sun god which was the first religion in the world. This proves that India should have been the oldest kingdom in the world. feedbacks welcome

OH, P.S. England is probably the newest culture to be in existance. It is a dialect of French and German. Northern France was once belonging to Germany. France took it over and thus the Germans were forced to conform. Soon enough a dialect became present and the new people spoke what we now know as English. They moved away to an Island they decided to call...England...and voila! P.S. Why do you think Bretagne is up north in France...

China wasn't even called China until 221 BC when the Chin dynasty was established. Before it was composed of several warring states each with their own ruler. Even after this dynasty was established it fell after only 20 years following by a sucession of other dynasties. So China is not even close to being 5000 years old much less the oldest country in the world.

oh and when I say he government is the same goverment. Its ok for a gov to reform, or have a revolution, that is just the gov changing or evolving. But in my opinion if an outside force takes over and disbands the current gov or the current gov falls and no one else rules for a period of time than they are now not in existance and if a new gov starts up it cant date its existance back to the start of the older gov just because they share a name and common land.

Someone mentioned Greece as being old? Greece is only about 100 years old. There never was a 'Greece', only a whole bunch of city-states. Macedonia's first king (died 450BC) has got to make Macedoina One-of the oldest countries and kingdoms. Before any greeks decide to get political and claim Macedonia as greek, I'll leave you with this: It is known that Democracy came from the ancient greeks (the city states) and they did not and have never had a king (until the world powers gave them one last century). Macedonia was a kingdom. You can't have both... make up your mind, did you pioneer democracy or were you a monarchy?

Boy, it is obvious many do not know their history, especially, some British who claimed "We (Americans) stoled names from their country" --- VERY DUMB STATEMENT--the settlerS who originally named them British names in this blessed country the USA where British transplants! Duuhhhhh
Also, the one who said San Marino is the oldest is right when it comes to Europe it is not England or Demark!
ENGLAND does not even make the list!! Oh those British--what a pain.
Oh, Boy -- learn your history.
Here is the Oldest countries in Europe San Marino (301 AD) France (486 AD) Bulgaria (632 AD) Denmark (950 AD) Portugal (1143 AD) Andorra (1278 AD) Switzerland (1291 AD)

Most of France's western coast was owned by England for a long period of time... Bulgaria was owned by the Ottoman Empire... Denmark was captured by Germany in WWII... Portugal was captured by Napoleon... But as for San Marino, Andorra, and Switzerland, those dates are legitimate. I would have to agree that San Marino is the oldest.

Wow, some people post really dumb shit. All this depends on what constitutes as a country. Mesoptamia and Egypt saw some of the earliest civilizations, but present day Iran and Egypt are hardly the same countries today. England is certanily not the oldest, and to the idiot who wrote that English is just a French dialect of German, don't quit your day job. English is a Germanic language, brought to to the British Isles by three different Teutonic tribes: the Angles, Saxons and Jutes. There is most definatly a French influence due to the Norman Invasion and the Latin influence when the conversion to Christianity took place. And Bretagne, in English called Brittany, is a Celtic, ont English settlement.

If we are saying about old nations known for there calture we can say about Greece, China, Iran(Persia), Egypt..... The only old laungage that is still usable is the greek one since 1200bc.

The world's oldest country is India.Who said that Persia was part of India ? Persian people came to India for shelter when 'Muslims/Arabs' invaded them.Ratan Tata a big name among industrylists is a 'Parsee' whose forefathers were obviously an immigrant like so many people residing.Europe can boast of having oldest "nations" but even then as someone rightly said they can't boast of a book written from pre-historic times (Ramayana) proving again the ancient existence of India.Egypt and Ethiopia are still struggling to make a mark in the world economy ; even their culture hasn't been something of strongly adopted (No controversies please) how can they call them oldest ?

England... haha, that cracks me up. By far the oldest countries are India and China, they both have been through periods of occupations (like EVERY other country), but as an identity they have existed since before 2000 BCE. Both have pioneers in religion, science, mathematics, philosophy and astronomy. Silk, tea, decimal systems, concept of university, pacifism, architecture, martial arts, navigation are among a few marvelous things these countries are attributed to.

There used to be four ancient countries. Babylon, ancient india, ancient Egyptand, and China. The first one has disappeared for a long time, ancient India, ancient Egyptand used to be controled by foreign counties as colonies. So, there are neither ancient India nor ancient Egyptand in the world now. The only one is China which had never governed by alience. Moreover, Chinese, both majority(Han race) and minorities(other 55 races)was said as"the posterity of "Yellow Emperor(2698 BC to 2599 BC)".After few wars, he became the Emperor of "Hua Xia(means China)",although some parts of China still did not unify in that period. This is mentioned by the his composing and official history recordations from history minister around that time. And before him there were other who are Emperors called "three kings and five emperors". These were also proved by most of history ministers and recorders in each period of China. So, It should be more than 5000 years when the country was founded. Some one said Chin Dynasty, which is just the first unified kingdom. Although there were a lot of states fighting with each other before Chin Dynasty, it was just civil wars. Actually it is same as USA, having states, however can any person say USA is not a country?
Japan was born at least after Chin Dynasty. According the recods, Chinshi Emperor sent a minister called Xu Fu with 500 girls and 500 boys to go to the east islands for the "live forever medicine".this group of people could not come back without teh medicine ,so they settled down in some island such as Ryukyu and married with the autochthon on these island and , and then founded Japan. That is why they call themselves as "Yamato"which means "peace and unify" in Chinese Characters. Now there is Xu Fu temple in Japan for memory this original founder.
Korean, actually is a minority race of China, and korean byland used to be the territory of China. In past dynasty, korea, Japan and other countries in Asia called China as "ancestor nation".
Persia:its the earliest country is Achaemenid Empire (648 BC–330 BC)
Europe is begin at Angean civilization(around 1600BC), without country. The first country(we do not care was it unified or not)is Ancient Greek(776-323BC).
It is impossible that North and South America is the earliest country. Because most of them founded after the colonists settled down.

And I think, the topic is "the oldest country in the world".That means: first time is "current". second, the country should be governed, should has formal government, instead of civilization.Four ancient countiries, now, rests the unique China. According to my previous saying. The oldest country now must be China, which founded at least 5000 years ago ,without controling by any invaders.Ancient India civilization is from 2500BC but thsi is not a country. Then India is governed by England from 19 century.Ancient Egypt, although it began at 3100BC, it was ended by Macedonia(Ancient Greek at 332BC), after that it was governed by many invader. So it is no longer the Egypt.
Some one said Mongolian, actually Mongolian belongs to Chinese, which is minority of Chinese races.

No offense to any of you but the oldest countries in my books and probably all intelligent people accross the world would have to be GREECE, EGYPT AND CHINA, and some of the earliest areas inhabited by people (i.e people who had some knowledge, trading skills, etc)(not just people such as in africa) although not countries in any means would be mesopotamia and india. Persians have a very rich culture and literature. Denmark is in fact the oldest country in the world and the danish flag "danebrog" is the oldest flag in the world also. I am not trying to critize what the others has said but it is proven that Denmark is the oldest (if i could just find the link).
To those who wrote that Denmark was captured by the Germans in WWII, true they were captured but they werent under complete german control. The danish goverment+King still controlled everything except for very few things. For example when Danes where arrested they did not go under german control but under danish (except for the jewes due to Hilters hatred). Never was under german control and was not controled by Germany in WWII like the other countries like Poland. Learn the danish history before you type stuff it.
Anyway the danish monarch bloodline goes all the way back to the vikings to today, which is even more reason that Denmark is the oldest country.

The oldest country in the world is Denmark... All of the examples of other countries claiming to be older seem to be wrong... Firstly Egypt has been ruled by several other countries including the Ottoman Empire and British Empire... Ancient Greece was ruled by independent city-states and was until the Romans had them all under their control. From there they went under Byzantine rule and eventually Ottoman Turk rule, thus obviously excluding them... India wasn't unified until relatively recently and has for most of its history been several smaller states... If you consider India to be the Mughal Empire then its founding only goes back to the 1500's. Yes China is an old country, but it has been split apart and unified several times thus it does not count. Persia/Iran may also be a candidate for the oldest country in the world except for the fact that it was invaded by the Mongols in the 1200's and became part of their empire for a time...There is probably another reason I just can't think of it right now... Ethiopia is not the oldest country in the world because of its control under Italy for six years. San Marino is not the oldest country but the oldest constitution (1600), which is different. France is not the second oldest country in the world and if you really believe that I feel sorry for you... France was only united after the hundred years war... It would be like calling Germany the oldest country in the world because of some old Chieftan in the Brandenburg area of Germany. Japan is not the oldest, because though it may be claimed that it was founded in 660 BC it was only unified much later after many years. Sri Lanka has at several times in its history been a part of Southern Indian kingdom, and most importantly it was colonised by the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the British Empire...
The suggestion that Denmark is not the oldest country in the world because it was invaded by Germany does hold because it was only occupied by Germany and never actually incorporated into Germany. Oh and finally for all those people that think an African country should be the oldest, try opening a history book, you'll find most of them have been colonies and only gained independence in the 1960's... Remember the oldest country does not mean oldest culture, oldest city or oldest group/race of people.

People are stupid to ask (what is the world's oldest country!) Check the population and who have the most population is the oldest county. (CHINA) Archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest occupants in China date to as long as 2.24 million to 250,000 years ago by an ancient human relative (hominin) known as Homo erectus. One particular cave in Zhoukoudian (near current-day Beijing) has fossilized evidence that current dating techniques put at somewhere between 300,000 and 550,000 years old. Evidence of primitive stone tool technology and animal bones associated with H. erectus have been studied since the late 18th to 19th centuries in various areas of Eastern Asia including Indonesia (in particular Java) and Malaysia. It is thought that these early hominids first evolved in Africa during the Pleistocene epoch. By 2 million years ago, the first migration wave of H. erectus settled throughout the Old World.
Fully modern humans (Homo sapiens) are believed to originally have evolved between roughly 200,000 and 168,000 years ago in the area of Ethiopia or Southern Africa (Homo sapiens idaltu). By 100,000 to 50,000 years ago, modern human beings had settled in all parts of the Old World (25,000 to 11,000 BCE in the New World). In the last 100,000 years, all proto-human populations disappeared as modern humans took over or drove other human species into extinction.
The earliest evidence of fully modern humans in China comes from Liujiang County, Guangxi, where a cranium has been found and dated to approximately 67,000 years ago. Although much controversy persists over the dating of the Liujiang remains[1][2], there is a partial skeleton from Minatogawa in Okinawa, Japan that has been radiocarbon dated to 18,250 ±650 to 16,600 ±300 years BP, which implies that modern humans must have reached China before that time. for more information go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China

"The world's oldest country is a matter of dispute, depending on whether one considers the most important thing to be continuity in recorded history, national independence, or political institutions. The most plausible contender is China, which was united in 221 BC and can document Chinese-speaking governments on the Yellow River since about 1500 BC. Britain counts the oldest functioning parliamentary system (raising taxes, passing laws and hanging traitors since 1265); the Vatican the longest period of control over a single territory (but by now only a few buildings); and Iraq and Egypt the longest recorded histories (to c. 3000 BC). Japan probably has the oldest existing political institution (the imperial family has reigned since at least the 5th century and probably longer.)"

If national independence, continuity of government, territorial integrity and autonomous foreign policy are the measures of 'countryhood' is there any current nation besides the United States of America with 195 [1812-2007] years [at least] of each?
China was invaded, and parts held, by the European colonial powers and Japanese Empire. Also, it underwent a change in government in 1949.
Japan's autonomy was lost in 1945, but soon regained.
Persia/Iraq/Egypt have not enjoyed autonomy or continuity of government.
The Vatican relies on Italy for national defence.
Another contender, along the lines suggested above, might be the UK, except for the secession of Ireland in 1922. England particularly, whilst an 'old' country in the terms suggested above, has 'surrendered' its sovereignty to the UK.
No source, just interested in the debate.

Guys, some history here. First thing to clarify is that when we talk about oldest countries we have to think of countries that still exist, and not old civilizations like the greek, or persians or romans and so on. Second, and this one is up to debate, i think we have to count with countries that remain the same since they exist. And i think France is not there. France changed a lot during the years, the same with China. China from nowadays is not the China from centuries ago. i think with eveything account Denmark and Portugal are the oldest countries (after San Marino). I read somehwere Napolean invaded Portugal (though he got his ass kicked) and Denmark was invaded during WW2... but guys, an ivansion doesn't take the idependency away. Iraque is till Iraque.
Another mistake in these comments is about Australia. The country wasn't found by the white man 250 years ago, but 500 years ago by the portuguese.
And all the english people should go and learn their history.

A very tricky question and the answer depends on the question.
Define oldest country:
- unchanged political borders - Never comquered and ruled by other country - Not influenced by external cultural and social influences. - allways rulled and governed by the willing and power of its people - allways refered by the same name
Its safe to consider this list as a starting point:
San Marino (301 AD) France (486 AD) Bulgaria (632 AD) Denmark (950 AD) Portugal (1143 AD) Andorra (1278 AD) Switzerland (1291 AD)
Sam Marino is not actualy a state, but a city state many times and the rule of Italian city sates and under cultural and social influence of Italy, several time invadade and conquered.
France is actualy very old but it was unified and referred as France only in the 800, several times invaded and conquered/ruled by foreiner countries.
Bulgaria, well 500 years under the rule of Otomans im sure makes a lot of changes at all levels.
Denmark, quite old and dispersed cultural and tribal, in fact the actual borders are very dificult to define, under germam governement and not allways refered as denmark.
Portugal, as far as i know fills all criteria including the fact that as the oldest unchanged political borders. Napolean tried to invade Portugal 2 times but lost both battles. I would say Portugal for oldest under this criteria.

There are many amature opinions in these posts. One of these post said that Iran was created after the colonial powers after world war one! THATS NOT TRUE AT ALL!!!. Persia changed its name in the 1930's to the more old(!) and more appropriate name of Iran (the land of the Aryans).
There are or has been many of old cultures and civilisations in the world. But do we count the as countries as the countries we see today in the world? The concept and term of the nation-state did'nt actually arise before the French Revolution. In Political Science we count about 10 nation-states that excisted before the 15th century. They include(among others): Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Iran and some few others. But thats it! There is no egyptian or greek culture beeing called a nation-state. Civilisation arose independantly in many places in the world: Mesopotamia, Indus-river, Egypt, Yellow-river, South America etc. But becasue we have a ruler and a civilisation it does not count as a country in modern terms.
About Iran: I will not propose that Iran is the oldest nation-state or country in the world because my knowledge is too limited in this sense. But I do whant to say that the first unified Iranian nation-state was created 559 BC by Cyrus the Great when he unified the Elamites and Medians into one state: The Persian Empire(Achaemenian Empire)- the first global empire the world had ever seen. Still the persians had already had a civilisation for hundreds of years before the unification but that does not count in the terms of a nation state

I agree that China has one of the world's oldest civilisations. However, China was often invaded by nomadic tribe such as Mongolian, and dynasties sometimes changed. Japanese Imprial House is the world's oldest monarchy. Historian argues that it established in 4 or 5 centuries. No other monarchies in the world have such a long history. (Some data say the Imperial House founded in BC 660, but it is only a legend.)

I thought the oldest country in the world and still living was China?
England is not near being the oldest.
India can be considered as the oldest country because they found the first human in India. We all involved from monkeys/apes, and monkeys/apes are "Brown skinned" people.
Sooo yeah.. correct me if I'm wrong.

An old country is a country that preserved its ethnic name, language, and alphabet. The First Bulgarian Empire was founded in 632 and since then we're fighting for our survival. Even when we disapearred from the map for 500 years it was still known as Bulgarian state. Bulgaria has 1300 years of history.
OFFICIAL LIST OF OLDEST COUNTRIES: San Marino (301 AD) France (486 AD) Bulgaria (632 AD) Denmark (950 AD) Portugal (1143 AD) Andorra (1278 AD) Switzerland (1291 AD)

it depends whether you mean a country that still exists, or otherwise. if otherwise, the first towns were in turkey and india, but they were not natios. the oldest nation, 5,000 bc, was mesapotamia. however, if you mean a natin that still exiss, egypt is top, though the obvious choice, the true one. it also depends what you call a natio. if you call the towns of a few thousand, in india and turkey, nations, then yes, say them, but natios, with rulers, kings, ect, egypt, china, assyria, syria hittite, babylon, persia, lidya, libya, it all depends on what you class as a nation, or whether you mean a presently existing one. if you do, egypt.

I could see that many people claim is own country as the oldest... No one claim PORTUGAL. There is a difference to be one kingdom and one countrie. PORTUGAL become independent country in 1143 from the Galiza kingdom (one part of Spain). So if the general persons say that Spain is the oldest i must say that is a wrong sentence, PORTUGAL is the Nr 1.

Portugal as his borders since 1297 "tratado de alcanizes". Portugal is the oldest country because never changed his borders or name. Denmark (the oldest): early historical evidence talk Sweden: there are indications France: the country with approximately same borders San Marino some claim its existence Not one 100% ccertain that the country existed with the actual format (name and border). Before that we had the Lusitania, people from the Iberian peninsula come from that people. you know what if you are Portuguese just check those links below.

The oldest country whose borders have not changed from their current borders is Andorra. Portugal's current borders were defined after Andorra. And the only other real contender is San Marino. However, even though it was founded in 301, its borders changed to its present borders in 1463.

I am no expert but I know that neighboring Syria, Egypt, Ethiopia and Persia (Iraq-Iran)have Biblical references and it is entertaining to surmise that as the continents separated over time, this could well have been the "cradle of civilization" or "Eden".
