Why did the Vatican remove GOD'S COMMANDMENT #2?! (No human can rewrite God's Word!) Commandment #2 is -- Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. It's because the Vatican breaks that commandment all over the place!

Why did we switch around the Ten Commandments and not leave them in the order that they are presented in the Bible?

You do realise that there is no numbering in the bible. Verses were not added to the 1500's. there is actually 14 commandments. There have always been two numberings of it, Catholics have used booth. For the most part, thou shalt have no strange God and thou shalt have no idol-gods are pretty much the same thing. No other Gods.
Protestants combine 9 and 10 into thou shalt not cover thy neighbors good. You will notice we seperate them, a neighbors wife is held as something different than his goods.
Also, we do not worship statues. Ever read the bible? There are the cherubim that are ordered by God to be over the ark. The ark itself is heavily decorated. God orders many statues and images. Key word: graven images and idols.

They are exactly as I remember them as a child. It is more important to keep them and follow them, than to pick and choose on how one can criticize them, especially in modern western society. One cn do no better than to follow these ten commandments!

Apparently Randy Bruner and Barbara Worley have no idea what they are talking about. Josh is right, the Bible has no numbering system. Catholics combined the 1st and 2nd as being the same and split the 10th into the 9th and 10th because women aren't considered property any more. Barbara and Randy should have looked into that before they posted about the Catholic Commandments.

Anyone who has the inclination can determine for themselves whether or not the Catholic Church has re-written the 10 Commandments by going to the source, which is the Torah, written in Hebrew over 4,000 years ago.
Lets see, the 10 Commandments are first found in Exodus, looking in the Hebrew Bible it says,
Lo ta'aseh-lecha fesel vechol-temunah asher bashamayim mima'al va'asher ba'aretz mitachat va'asher bamayim mitachat la'aretz.
or in English...
You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
So yes, it is apparent that the Catholic Church has re-written the 10 Commandments. What is more disturbing is that Catholics are so willing to believe what they're told by their superiors on face value rather than looking into it for themselves. I'm not a Catholic hater by any means, but I'm convinced from what I've read in the Bible that those who are responsible for perveting God's Word will be held accountable, and I wouldn't want to be in their shoes come Judgement Day.

My daughter is learning the Ten Commandments in school. I was shocked when I read over her list and found that "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them;” was omitted.
If an idol is an object of passionate devotion, and to worship an idol means to honor or have reverence for it as a divine being, and reverence is honor and respect mixed with love and awe, then obviously the Catholic Church has altered the cornerstone of Judeo-Christian beliefs.
Coveting a neighbor's "anything" is wrong. His wife is no more or less important than anything else the neighbor has. The point is if we want "it" more than a right relationship with God, then we'll be out of step with Him.
As for the omission of the "idols" commandment, this is utterly blasphemous. To pray to anyone other than God Himself is prohibited. Even Jesus told us to pray to God in His name and not to Jesus Himself. Remember, God is a jealous god. Just ask the Midianites who worshipped Baal, or King Nebuchadnezzar who worshipped an image of gold.
What does it all mean? If you're worshipping, honoring, revering and bowing down to anyone except God, well, it's not for me to judge . . . He will.

You guys are right, there was no numbering system, but you guys are also wrong to combine those two. No man can rewrite God's word and I'm afraid that's just what the Catholic church did.

WOW - don't u guys know that the commandemnts were passed down through oral tradition for hundreds of years? The story of Exodus happened around 1280 B.C. - the first ever written version of the Torah was in the 6th century B.C; THATS 600 YEARS!!!!! The Catholic Church translated the wording of the commandments from the Septuigent (the Greek version of the Torah compiled by 70 Rabbis) into the Latin Vulgate into vernacular languages such as enlish. The laws have been passed down for generations, translated countless times, and then put into English. The point of the commandments is to give a moral code to live by (something unique in the ancient world of Moses); assuming we follow the spirit of that code, and not get nitpicky about the exact wording of it, we will all turn out better.

One of the comments above said that the Protestants combined "#9 & #10" to come up with one "Thou shalt not covet". WE did not combine anything. WE are painfully aware that God's Word should not be altered by humans, and WE would never think to do such a thing. The Bible predicted that the Roman Catholic Church (the little horn) would "think to change times and laws" and they certainly have. They changed the "times" by completely throwing out God's calendar and adopting a completely different one (which is what the world now follows), and they changed "laws" by having the audacity to think they could alter God's Commandments in any way. And to try to say that the Protestants did the same thing is a boldfaced lie.

Sandy, I liked your review except that it is fine to pray to Jesus because Jesus *is* God. You are absolutely right that the Bible, specifically the Ten Commandments, prohibit worshipping anything or anyone but God.

Excuse me, but you left out the true 2nd commandment, about not having graven images (in other words, no IDOL WORSHIP), and split the 10th commandment into two. The true 10th commandment includes not coveting your neighbor's wife or his goods....

I wonder how many people are troubled by how negative this list is? Don't do this and don't do that instead of telling us what to do.
Also, is anyone troubled by the fact that armies have killed, raped, stole, and lied in the name of Christianity to spread the religion all over the world?
I think spirtuality is great, but religions are the invention of man, and, therefore, flawed just as everything else we create.
Think about that.
I am a baptized Presbyterian myself but I think it is important to question these things...

Dear brethren, I was Catholic for 36 years. And, for most of that time, I never read the Bible. I just went to mass and listened to the priest. At 37, I decided to read the Bible myself. Anyway, here is website of the actual Hebrew version translated line by line into English. http://www.blueletterbible.org. Exodus Chapter 20 lists the commandments. Now, Exodus 34:28, makes reference to these commandments, And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. And again, Deu 4:13, And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, [even] ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. Deu 10:4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spake unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me. I hope that helps anyone interested in knowing the truth. There is no mistaking that God gave only 10 commandments. If you want to get technical, Jesus also gave a commandment. Jesus said in John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. I hope that helps you.

This is taken from the catholic mirror of Sept. 23, 1893. "The Prodestants claim to stand upon the written word only. They profess to hold the Scripture alone as the standard of faith. They justify their revolt by the plea that the Church has apostatized from the from the written word and follows tradition. Now the Prodestants' claim, that they stand upon the written word only, is not true. Their profession of holding the Scripture alone as the standard of faith, is false. PROOF: The written word explicitly enjoins the observance of the seventh day as the Sabbath. They do not observe the seventh day, but reject it. If they do truly hold the Scipture alone as their standard, they would be observing the seventh day as is enjoined in the Scipture throughout. Yet they not only reject the observance of the Sabbath enjoined in the written word, but they have adopted and do practice the observance of Sunday, for which they only have the tradition of the Church. Consequently the claim of "Scripture alone as the standard," fails; and the doctrine of "Scripture and tradition" as essential, is fully established, the Prodestants themselves being the judges." There was no getting around this, for the Prodestants' own statement of faith-the Augsburg Confession, 1530- had clearly admitted that "the observation of the Lord's Day" had been appointed by "the Church" only. This next information is from "The Faith of our Fathers," vol 2 pp. 605-608. The official Latin title of the pope is VICARIUS FILII DEI, which means "Vicar of the SON of GOD". For several centuries this official title appeared upon the pope's mitre, his crown. Take the roman numeral values of those letters and add them up. The total:666. This is not new news-The principal exponent of this calculation was Andreas Helwig (c. 1572-1643. Is this currently found on the pope's mitre? NO. Back in the early seventeenth century the Church of Rome was sufficiently embarrassed by this revelation, and they removed the "Vicarious Filii Dei" from the mitre. But the roman Catholic church still uses this phrase in their ceremonies whenever a new pope is ordained. "Vicarius Filii Dei" is still the pope's official title. In my own words , the papacy is the beast of Revelation, and Mohamed is the "False Prophet". The image of the beast is apastate prodestantism. So, don't choke on that, just chew more than normal and swallow hard.
